Iran says warships headed close to US borders

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iranian warships dispatched to the Atlantic Ocean will travel close to U.S. maritime borders for the first time, a senior Iranian naval commander said Saturday.

The commander of Iran's Northern Navy Fleet, Admiral Afshin Rezayee Haddad, said the vessels have already entered the Atlantic Ocean via waters near South Africa, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Additional information -

The "destroyer" in the 2 ship group apparently is a Brit built Vosper MK V small frigate named Sabalan, the "helicopter carrying support ship" is a general purpose supply ship named Kharg.

If the information I read is correct Sabalan was originally named Rostam but was renamed after rebuilding made necessary by nearly being sunk by an A-6 Intruder from USS Enterprise during the so-called "tanker war" with Iran and in retaliation for the planting of the sea mines that broke the back of the frigate USS Samuel B Roberts.

The Vosper MK V is about half the size and displacement of a WWII Fletcher class destroyer.
