Ha, ha - 'ass from elbow', indeed. At least I don't try to use my arm when wiping my backside.
You are correct. I for one European, do not understand how you guys can be so simplisticly masochistic by bringing such hell upon yourself. What we do understand is that we should continue to watch the U.S. closely so as to avoid your mistakes and block, as far as we can, the export thereof in the guise of 'democracy'.
I take it that you are not a product of 60's dope - you just had two 50's and moved right on into the 70's? [to be politically correct for the accreditation rules: I think that one comes from a film.]

I for one European, do not understand how you guys can be so simplisticly masochistic by bringing such hell upon yourself. I am sure that means something to somebody, just not to me... You guys have been there and done that for real, not the rather shoddy imitation you accuse us of doing. I mean, hell, we took over Iraq and Afghanistan and turned around and gave them right back, which is more than I can say for you guys. You just wore out your welcome both here and elsewhere and we threw your asses out. Now THAT was an empire. (By the way I can't wait for that oil we have been stealing to start flowing in so these gas prices will go down.) Fortunately I was insulated from that stupidity from the 60's, living in the heartland as I did.

Hmm ... being a Guest I don't seem to have a QUOTE button so I will use cut/paste for now and add my own indentation a la THC.

>I am sure that means something to somebody, just not to me...
This was a simple side swipe at the past two "elections" in the U.S., with some emphasis on the last one. Prior to 19 March 2003 I was happy to associate with the Administration. Since then, in my eyes, they are the very Devil Incarnate and Demons that should be relegated back to the depths from which they came - somewhere in Texas, I believe.

Yes, it was, but like all Empires it ran its course. I have just finished Niall Ferguson's "Empire" [paperback] - to my mind an excellent 'overview' of the 400 years, warts and all. I have also bought "Colossus" [paperback] on the 'Rise and Fall of the American Empire' - his sub-title, not mine. I am sure there will be opportunity enough to discuss both of these.
>(By the way I can't wait for that oil we have been stealing to start flowing in so these gas prices will go down.)
Ha, ha - Again, I don't think that I suggested theft, simply that with de facto control over all agreements "in the name of the Iraqi Government" - as well as the moorings in the Gulf - the U.S. would make sure that they maintain their supremacy at the Basra and Kirkuk pumps.

I think that was the point that was being made in the film, but I would have to remember where it came from to be sure. The index engine grinding in the back of my head makes me think it was somewhere in "Field of Dreams", either in the town-hall meeting or in some interplay between Costner and "Terence Mann".
