...on my way to the complementary continental breakfast, when I passed a pair of soldiers dressed in camo BDU's. I gave them a smile, a nod, and a friendly, "good mornin', boys." "Good morning, Sir." they replied almost in unison. As they passed the front desk, I overheard the clerk apologise for calling them Marines earlier. (The hotel is just 2 miles from a large Marine Air Base, and the subdued US ARMY in black letters on dark camo is barely legible) The clerk was clearly embarrassed, and the soldiers probably didn't care about the mistake, but appeared awkward about how to gracefully accept the apology. I turned and walked back to where the soldiers had stopped, and in a louder than normal voice, said to the clerk, "Hell, they all look alike to me..." and I reached out to shake the closest one's hand, "They look like...FREEDOM!" Big grins burst out all across the room, from the soldiers, the clerk, guests in the lobby, and passers-by. True story. Just thought some here might appreciate it.

Haha nice Steven. It always makes me smile/laugh when people stop me on the streets to thank me while I'm in uniform. I always just say thank you but inside I'm like "I'm just a college student" It is a nice change of pace from being called a baby-killer though.

Great story Steven James It's a nice change of pace from being called a baby-killer though.Has this actually happened to you? Yep - twice now. Rarely do people have the balls to actually say something to me - especially when I'm in my BDUs. The new combat boots that I just bought are so ridiculous that no one would dare say something to me . However, I do get a lot of stares. You know, the "You are the reason why the world hates America" types of looks. However, I gotta admit that someone thanked us today. We were driving back from ROTC this morning (after a fun-filled day of yelling at the Cadets, since I'm a Training Officer now) and while we were at a red light, some woman gave us a thumbs-up and said thanks. People like her (and Steven) remind me of why I'm doing what I'm doing.

Nice, Steve. It means so much to our men in the military, if I can take the experiences of my sons. FF, Stick it out, Sweetheart. I'm grateful you're so strong, stay that way. I know how somethings people do can cut straight to the heart, and some might take a deep hurt from it. But we need to try to remember where these poor souls are coming from. It's no reflection on you, but it is a reflection on them.

Your doing a great thing for this country James and like Merc said what these people do shows more of who they are than you.

Thanks everyone. Believe me, I know that I am better than these people. I have integrity, loyalty and have dedicated my life to the protection of the Republic.
These people have no jobs, no future, no lives - nothing. They are pissed off because they are slaves to the federal government and they know that they could never go through what I have gone through. I am proud to be part of a very elite group of Americans who have gone to and passed a military training enviornment, e.g. boot camp. And while I further my education by earning a Masters in Military History and develop strategy for the USAF, these people will still be the losers that they are today.
So they can enjoy their little rally that they had today but it doesn't mean anything. Tomorrow when they wake up they will still be stuck in their dead-end jobs with no future whatsoever.
