Issues & Insights American Advantage Posted 3/21/2006 Employment: While French youths are rioting over a proposal that would actually help them get work, U.S. college graduates are about to enter a hot job market. Could it be that the French system is a failure? An anti-market, welfare state has not served France — or any other nation for that matter — well. As we noted on this page Tuesday, the French economy has grown a paltry 1.6% a year since 2001. That's stagnation. Economic output in France, as well as Germany and Italy, has fallen far behind that of the U.S. across the last two decades. Since the end of World War II, a soft, cradle-to-grave socialism has been nurtured across Europe while American capitalism has been dismissed as antiquated and just plain mean. Its cruel vagaries had no place in the enlightened parlors and rule-making halls of modern, bureaucratic Europe. Being unencumbered by the grip of cold, unfeeling capitalism, the French have been able fabricate rights, among them the lifetime right to a job. As a result, firing incompetents and underperformers in France is nearly impossible. That restriction, of course, puts French companies at a disadvantage. Their incentive to hire is undercut because they know that if they hire the wrong person, they cannot fire him or her and replace that worker with someone better. So rather than take a chance at being stuck with a poor worker, they don't hire at all. The inevitable effect of a private sector that can't meet its employment needs is an economy that is chained to the deck. Ah yes...let's all strive for mediocrity! (we could put it to music and make that the Socialist Theme Song!) Come on sing along! I'm adequate, you're adequate...I'll work on it...

I often wonder what these people are thinking when they implement such a flawed system.
They must know that their are worthless bums out their that can't keep a job in the real world. It's as if they believe the threat of not being fired will somehow make the poor performers somehow better.
A little hard reality is sometimes the best medicine to cure the lazy. Let them wear rags and survive on food out of a microwave and it'll do wonder's for their motivation to go out and find a job.

While stationed in Germany a friend of mine worked at an ADIDAS distibution center. There was a woman that "worked" there that would park herself next to the beer machine (you the one, it's next to the soda machine) and drink herself to oblivion 2-3 times a week. All day long getting totally wasted. I asked my friend why didn't they fire her. She said they couldn't, she's in the union! Her brother and father often came home tanked on fridays.

I don't understand how someone could live their life like that.
It seems so pointless.

If France was a stock, I'd be selling. So would I. Seriously, if this makes me sound cruel, too damn bad; When their country collapses, I'm going to be laughing. No country deserves it more.

Just as the Democratic Party is beholden to Unions here in the US, the same goes for France. And minimum wage hikes are consistently supported by unions. Some people refuse to make the connection.

Unions have long outlived their purpose. Now they're just a leach on American manufacturing. People complain about how much we import. OK, as soon as American factories can produce the same products as cheaply as they're made overseas people will buy American. And WHY does it cost SO much to make things here? Inflated wages wouldn't have something to do with it would they?

With all of the problems that America already has, do you really want a civil war in France as well?
No American should honestly hope for Europe's second strongest country to fall apart.
Hopefully France is realizing the error of its ways and is going through the difficult reform process that Britain went through in the 80s.
Don't forget that this is a program proposed by the French government. Simply going back and criticizing their old methods really does no one any good. The rioters are going to lose - they don't have enough support. Certainly America would want to be on the "winning" side here....

No, I dont think anyone really wants France to fall apart, but it should serve as an example to all the socialist dems who strive for the same system. Socialism doesnt work.
The only reason China is doing okay is because they mix communism/socialism and capitalism. Financially they are okay, socially, Tienemin Square and they still have people starving and living in disgusting poverty, need we say more.

I can't hide that a part of me is always happy to hear that these morons are having a hard time. I'm happy their govt is starting to see the error of their ways and is seeking to reform them and I wish them the best in doing so. With that said though, France still sucks balls.
