For the same reasons we invited the Soviets to watch them. Politics.

And it gives them the opertunity to see that we can easily kick the shit out of them if they start something...and, they can think about what we DIDN'T show them. What capabilities we have that were hidden.
Back in the day, when I was in Germany we had to deal with the Soviet Military Liaison Mission (SMLM). They would come out and watch our exercises. Sometimes they would be a pain in the ass. On one occasion the brigade was moving out and this SMLM car (They had special liscense plates) kept cutting in and out of our convoys so a company commander got the ok from the brigade to do something about it. the next time they cut in a convoy one M113 in front pulled into the left lane and slowed down next to another then one in the rear pulled out and moved up next to the Russians, boxing them in. Then all the 113's just eased over to the right and forced the Russians off the road into a field. We had to wait for a 3 star to come and escort them back to their consolate. They were not happy, which made it all the more fun. ;D

I hope that we are invited to China-Russia exercises, which may also include India. Last Russia-china exercise was interesting. Theme was anti-terrorist operations. somebody should explain to me why for anti-terrorist operation you would need heavy armor, one elite airborne division plus squadron of heavy bombers. There were plenty of fighter bombers, fighters and transport planes, and naval combat ships. I sure would like to see their plan for surgical strike. To me it sounds like taking the whole city.

That's a precision strike for them...flatten the whole city. Pretty precise huh! The Chinese have never fought a modern conventional war. In Korea they resorted to mass wave attacks. Not the most modern way to engage an enemy. As for the Russians, they still cling to their Soviet era doctrine. The same one the Iraqi army used to such good effect in the Gulf War. I bet those Russian Generals shit themselves when we took apart the Iraqi army as easily as we did. Not to mention how easily our weapons turned their top of the line stuff into so much scrap.

Russian military mentality focus on mass fire power and manpower. Same for the Chinese. Just look at their WWII casualty figures. They are astronomical. Russians saw their tactics going to hell in Afghanistan. Being unable to go into mass attack must of gave them a bad feeling. To me the last year military exercise seem to be more aim toward Taiwan. here we have another interesting situation. Taiwan and Japan sign mutual defense agreement. So in case Chinese attack Taiwan, Japan suppose to help them. We have the same agreement with Japan. So one way or the other we could get suck into the Taiwan Straights. I still feel that China will eventually attack Taiwan. My bet is that it will happen after the olympic games, which will be held in China 2012.

The Chinese are trying to modernise their forces. Of course you can have to most modern equipment but if you never train on it you just have a lot of very expensive targets for your enemies. Add to this the fact that the US weapons are 1 generation ahead of western european and 2-3 generations ahead of the chinese and, well, they are just going to have lots of expensive targets for us to shoot at.

They are doing pretty good job in modernization. I just hope that problems with China will not go into military action. We would have to draft people and recall many experienced ones.

It is very unlikely that we will end up at war w/China, Maoism is dying there and Capitalism has a strong foot in the door. W/the return of Hong Kong Capitalism sprang forth endorced by their leaders, socialism is dying fast.

There is also the chance that the Chinese people could rise up is the Party decides to go to war with us. I think once word of the slaughter we would bring upon thier troops got out, and the attacks on their infrastructure would bring a lot of pressure on the Party.
A prime example of our capabilities is the SDB (Small Diameter Bomb). It's a 250 lb bomb that basically ressembles a missile. a B1 Bomber can carry 200 SDBs, and each is a GPS guided munition. One B1 can then attack up to (theoretically) up to 200 seperate targets in one pass.

One thing of interest just occured to me. We've seen the recent news reports on the upcoming missile test in N. Korea. Now this is big news because this missile could supposedly hit the western portion of the US.
Now I know there are more and more differences between China and N. Korea as the years move on, but China themselves posses missiles that can be launched from on of their nuclear subs and reach most of the continential us. This may not seem like much since we are in good relations with China, but we're only in good relations with them right now. How long do you think it'll be until this missile is launched should the U.S. and China go to war?
In a war with China we still hold a great advantage, but they will still have the capability to inflict harm on U.S. soil should war break out in the future.

All the more reason to perfect our ABM capabilities.
