David Hickman was a star football player in McLeansville, North Carolina. He was a quiet man with a larger-than-life presence. He also holds the distinction of being the last soldier to die before the official announcement of the end of the Iraq war. That fact has made him a part of history, CNN affiliate WGHP reports. Hickman, an Army specialist, was remembered Thursday by friends as the U.S. marked the official end of the war. news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/12/16/n-c-soldier-reportedly-last-to-die-in-iraq-war/?hpt=hp_c2

Your kids made it home safely Merc and warrior, that's the important thing here. Once this thing got started we knew there would be a "last casualty" just as there will be in Afghanistan.
My niece's NCANG unit is gearing up for an Afghan deployment. Her Mom nearly had kittens during the Iraq deployment, she's already showing signs of stress even though the deployment won't start until late 2012 (according to what I've been told.)
Last deployment she turned down my offer of the loan of a pistol (personal arms were permitted.) This time I want to offer her some time on the range with an all up AK, just in case she needs the knowledge.

Turns out my niece doesn't need my help in getting checked out on an AK, her husband (a contractor she met in Iraq) is an avid shooter (and computer geek, that's how she met him.) They keep handguns, a shotgun and (I think) an AR-15 in the house and she's followed in her Grandpa's shoes by teaching her 3 rug rats about firearms at an early age. Right now all three are at the "keep your mitts off, and this is why..." stage but very shortly the eldest (daughter) will be old enough to learn to shoot. If she's anything like her Mom her future boyfriend had best be on his best behavior.

My son told me I seem to be going through as much PTSD as he is....... I can't watch any movies anymore about war. I sob watching the Marine recruitment commercials still..........
