Sheriff’s team working to seize guns from thousands in Illinois An Illinois sheriff’s team is crisscrossing the Chicago suburbs in an effort to seize guns from thousands of people whose right to own a firearm has been revoked, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. According to the paper, more than 3,000 people in Cook County have failed to surrender their revoked Firearm Owners Identification Card, or FOID, which is required to legally buy guns or ammunition. www.foxnews.com/us/2013/07/28/sheriffs-team-working-to-seize-guns-from-thousands-in-illinois/

According to the article the Sheriff's Office is following the law, confiscating the Authorization Cards ("authorization" to exercise a right?) from those JUDGED mentally incompetent or unbalanced, felons and those with restraining orders against them.
While this is legal and I don't have problems with the unbalanced and felons being disarmed I do have problems with the fact that Cook Country REQUIRES an authorization card on top of the other screenings a firearms purchaser has to go through to buy a weapon plus registration of the weapon. That card is also required in order to purchase ammo. As I see it, a simple low level clerk could deny someone his 2nd Amendment rights simply by refusing to process the request for the card.
