A little over 2 weeks ago a co-worker of mine began getting threatening messages from one of her brothers. Obviously the guy is a couple fries short of a Happy Meal.
A week ago she took a course that resulted in her obtaining a Concealed Carry permit though she didn't yet know if she really wanted a handgun.
Yesterday she asked my opinion on a good, reputable dealer but didn't ask my opinion on what type of weapon to buy.
Today she told me she had purchased a .380 cal semi-auto, small enough to easily conceal but with good stopping power according to the woman at the gunshop who sold her the piece. Then she explained why she got off the dime and bought it.
Her brother had been texting hostile remarks since their father had passed away about 2 weeks ago, yesterday he went beyond that and texted both a threat of violence and a message that indicated he knew she has changed her home locks, he apparently had a key to the old locks. He made similar violent threats to a brother in New York.
Unlike the New York brother she was able to purchase a weapon for defense. She also filed a complaint with the police locally, New York brother filed a complaint there.
I offered her sanctuary here in my home if she felt the need to get out, there is no way in hell her screw loose brother can know where I live, and even if he did both Mrs and I have artillery and know how to use it.
Thank God for the right of self-defense.

She should turn her text over to the local PD.
Sounds like a restraining order is indicated as well.
And practicing the art of the double-tap.

She turned the texts over to the Chesapeake PD. I don't know if a restraining order has been issued either here or in New York where the other brother lives.
When has a restraining order ever stopped a wacko? More to the point, what would be more effective at stopping a wacko, a restraining order or a well placed bullet?

The restraining order creates legal standing for prosecution.
Might be useful if the immediate threat doesn't quite warrant deadly force.

True, but I think the brother's activities have progressed beyond the restraining order level. It may be that the next thing I hear from my friend is she had to shoot the guy though I hope it doesn't come to that.
