Iranian Regime Invites Ahwaz Residents To Public Execution In late June 2013, the Iranian Internet portal Gooya News published a photo of a billboard put up by the Iranian court in Khuzestan province, in southern Iran, inviting residents of the city of Ahwaz to watch the hanging of a convicted local drug dealer.[1] The execution was also covered by Iranian TV.[2] The Iranian regime, which ranks second in the world in rate of executions, often invites the public to watch them. In 2012, moderate conservative circles criticized the public's enthusiasm for attending executions, and particularly parents' practice of bringing their children.[3] In response, regime elements explained that allowing the public to watch executions was aimed at deterring crime and increasing the security of Iranian society.[4] Recently, Iranian human rights activists outside Iran reported that public executions are continuing full speed ahead, and that between June 30 and July 30, 2013, at least 97 took place.[5] The following is a translation of the billboard (emphases in original):[6] www.memri.org/report/en/0/0/0/0/0/0/7372.htm
