Military foundation offers to cover death benefits as lawmakers consider fixA private foundation has stepped forward to cover death benefits for the families of troops who've been killed in combat after the Pentagon confirmed the payments have been suspended as a result of the partial government shutdown. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., announced Tuesday that the Maryland-based Fisher House Foundation has offered to cover the $100,000 payments that the government typically pays out to families within three days of a soldier's death. "I am so grateful that the Fisher House Foundation volunteered to help military families to make sure there is no funding gap during a time of unimaginable grief, " Manchin said in a statement, adding that the organization has agreed to cover flights, hotels and other incidentals for family members. The Pentagon says that as long as the budget impasse lasts, it will not be able to pay death benefits to the families of troops who've been killed in combat. This is truly sad. These men and women gave life for their country and now their families are treated like a trash. May be president, his cabinet, senators, and congressmen should donate one month pay to the safering families. We know better, that will not happen.

I don't think we heard last of it on this issue. I read somewhere that beside the truckers, veterans will also march on DC this weekend. I wonder what will be the result of truckers/veterans march on DC. We may see Obama deploying his DHS storm troopers.

President Obama’s shameful death-benefit theater The Obama administration insisted Tuesday it had no choice but to withhold death benefits to relatives of 1st Lt. Jennifer Moreno, a 25-year-old soldier born and raised in San Diego, and four other soldiers killed since the partial government shutdown began Oct. 1. This is ridiculous and perverse. President Barack Obama has used an expansive — and some legal scholars believe extreme — interpretation of his powers to unilaterally rewrite key provisions of the No Child Left Behind law, the sweeping 2002 measure that drastically reshaped federal education policies. In similar fashion, the president has unilaterally rewritten key provisions of the Affordable Care Act, his sweeping 2010 measure that is drastically reshaping federal public health policies. His administration has also essentially rewritten federal laws governing illegal immigration and penalties for drug possession. www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/oct/09/denial-of-death-benefits-shame-on-president-obama/

Let me get this straight.
The House and Senate passed and Obama signed legislation that WH spokesweasel Carney says "wasn't necessary."
Before the shutdown the House and Senate passed and Obama signed legislation that would have kept the death gratuities going, but the WH lawyers said "no go," so the payments were stopped despite the fact that Obama has a wide history of ignoring or changing laws to suit his desires and could have kept them going over the objections of the lawyers.
And there is the order to "make the shutdown as painful as possible" to consider.
This looks to me as if the stopping of military death benefits was deliberate and at the order of someone in the WH (Obama.)
Carney was right, this wasn't necessary. It was a deliberate "make it hurt" move.

I think decision was based on several DC clowns, possibly including Hagel. But we will never know. This is just sick. Carney was right, this wasn't necessary. It was a deliberate "make it hurt" move. - One day each of these clowns will receive a paycheck they will not like. Sometimes I wish it was sooner than later.
