The Struggle Between Khamenei And Rafsanjani Over The Iranian Leadership – Part VIII: Rafsanjani Receives Death Threats Recent statements by Iranian Expediency Council head Hashemi Rafsanjani regarding his claim that regime founder Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini would have agreed in principle to the omission of the "Death to America" slogan. This claim, which he made in order to prepare the ground for direct negotiations with the U.S. on the nuclear issue, has sparked strong ideological and emotional protests in the anti-Rafsanjani camp.[1] As will be recalled, on September 30, 2013, Rafsanjani's office presented an excerpt from his memoirs in which he made this claim. The excerpt had been published under the headline "The Imam [Khomeini] agreed to the omission of the 'Death to America' [slogan]."[2] The week before that, Rafsanjani had stated that Khomeini had told him in a private meeting on September 14, 1988 that "regarding the U.S., his opinion is that we should not cause [the U.S.] to despair regarding [the possibility of] a renewal of relations – even though the [Iranian] people will not be quick to accept this."[3] www.memri.org/report/en/0/0/0/0/0/0/7486.htm
