Shades of the Cold War ... Chinese Naval Vessel Tries to Force U.S. Warship to Stop in International WatersA Chinese naval vessel tried to force a U.S. guided missile warship to stop in international waters recently, causing a tense military standoff in the latest case of Chinese maritime harassment, according to defense officials. The guided missile cruiser USS Cowpens, which recently took part in disaster relief operations in the Philippines, was confronted by Chinese warships in the South China Sea near Beijing’s new aircraft carrier Liaoning, according to officials familiar with the incident. “On December 5th, while lawfully operating in international waters in the South China Sea, USS Cowpens and a PLA Navy vessel had an encounter that required maneuvering to avoid a collision,” a Navy official said. Does anyone think these asshats would be so frisky if we had real leadership in Washington?

101, I really don't think it would make much difference who was in charge in DC. The Soviets did exactly the same thing all through the Cold War, though it usually them following our carriers around.
In fact they weren't shy about "bumping" our ships so there is plenty of precident for the Chinese to do the same thing.
Go to YouTube and look up "USS Caron rammed" or "USS Yorktown rammed."

I'm aware of the Soviet challenges during the Cold War. This seems like a new aggressiveness on he part of the Chicoms. It is and I think it's a matter of they are feeling their oats and have decided to see how far they can push with their newfound power. China claims most of the South China Sea as theirs, as part of their economic exclusion zone and ignores the claims of every other nation boardering that sea just as Gadaffi claimed the whole of the Gulf of Sirt, demanding everyone else stay the hell out despite the fact that major international trade routes cross those waters. They also claim waters and territories belonging to other nations including South Korea, Taiwan (they claim the whole damned island nation) and as far out from their coasts as The Phillipines. They are pushing their own interpretation of the UN Law of the Sea Treaty (which we have not signed or ratified BTW) and using it to grab everything within reach.

I was in the middle of the spat with Libya in the Gulf of Sirt and had left the Caron just before the Black Sea cruise where she swapped paint samples with the KGB Mirka class frigate. I had been to the Black Sea twice before in Caron, in company with Yorktown, went places and saw things and got the KGB border forces thoroughly pissed with us. ;D So pissed in fact on that second cruise they had part of the Soviet Air Force overfly us with Backfire bombers at low level, low enough to see that some of those birds were carrying those big assed supersonic cruise missiles the Russians love. Shot some good video and intel pictures too.

DID YOU APPROVE OF THE B-52s that recently flew through China's alleged air space a while ago?www.nytimes.com/2013/11/27/world/asia/us-flies-b-52s-into-chinas-expanded-air-defense-zone.html?_r=0I didn't hear ANYTHING from you about THAT. Is silence assent?
DID I SAY I was "happy"? I know you don't want to give me a straight answer about any thing, but just what l DID you expect them to do about this? LET'S HEAR IT. I am not "happy" about ANYTHING that the newly emboldened PLAN does. WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE?TRY to be specific.
TRY!!!!

"DID YOU APPROVE OF THE B-52s that recently flew through China's alleged air space a while ago?
Since you asked, why wouldn't I. It's not REALLY their sovereign territory, is it?
What would I have done? Sent a stern warning about how such provocations could effect their status as a trading partner for one.
What did Obama do?

Whatever it was, I'm quite sure it was not for your benefit. I am also quite sure Obama has access to a lot more information about the situation than you do, that he has advisors, including the Chiefs of Naval Operations, that have forgotten more than you ever knew about Naval operations in the Pacific, and that whatever decision he made, he made it on the basis of information you do not have access to. I don 't KNOW what he did, or did not do, or why, and neither do you. Now, here's the deal: Although I can't prove it, I am quite certain that a LOT of conversations are taking place about the Pacific and territorial rights. Japan, Korea, the Philippines, and the United States are all in the mix. A LOT of what is said and done is NOT said or done in public[/u]. I learned THAT when I had access to certain transmissions. The balance of the United States Navy is in the Pacific, these days, 101.

I didn't hear a word from you about THAT power shift, either. As far as YOU are concerned, national security and the performance of the United States Navy isn't the issue here. The issue is OBAMA as far as you are concerned. The proof is your posts.
I agreed with Old Sailor because I remember all too well the confrontations during the Cold War. you don't, and you don't care. That's the difference.

Yes, why would I?Your concern is not the performance of the United States Navy, or national security. It's Obama. "Does anyone think these asshats would be so frisky if we had real leadership in Washington?" I agreed with old Sailor because I remember all the near misses with the Soviets during the Cold War, when World War III didn't break out because of a collision between a couple of ships. You apparently do not.

The US Navy will do as it has always done.
"You apparently do not."
Nonsense.
How many of those involved an increasingly belligerent emerging Asian superpower grossly exaggerating it's stated sovereignty?
Good to know you are satisfied with Obama's leadership.

The US Navy will do as it has always done. "You apparently do not." "Nonsense. How many of those involved an increasingly belligerent emerging Asian superpower grossly exaggerating it's stated sovereignty?" For CENTURIES the Chinese have repeatedly demonstrated that the closer to their borders you get, the more aggressive they become. They consider the Pacific Rim to be their area of influence.
We consider Planet Earth to be ours.
They fought the Koreans and the Japanese when the Japanese invaded Korea in the 16th century, when Japan invaded Korea and China in the twentieth century , at yhe very least.
They fought us in Korea and in Vietnam.
Now, they are building a modern Navy to protect their interests, whether they coincide with our interests, or not. [/b] And by the way, the neighborhood is getting increasingly dangerous. Russia has nukes. China has nukes. North Korea has nukes. The only reason South Korea and Japan don't have nukes (BOTH nations can BUILD them. That's obvious.)is because they have us. But the day North Korea successfully tests a missile with a payload that corresponds to a militarily capable nuclear warhead, or they successfully test a uranium bomb, South Korea will start developing a bomb, and then Japan will have nuclear weapons in about one year from that date.
VERY dangerous neighborhood, no matter WHO the is President, and even people who don't pay attention to anything but partisan politics might even pay attention to THAT. Ya THINK? I agreed with Old Sailor because of all of THAT. NOT because of the dime store partisan politics you are so fond of. "Good to know you are satisfied with Obama's leadership". YOU know damned well I haven't said anything of the fucking kind.
EVER!!!!!!!! The last President whose leadership I was "satisfied" with got his brains blown all over the back seat of a limousine in Dallas in 1963 for his trouble. Go find someone else to put your ridiculously inaccurate political labels on.
