Found buried deep in an article on the latest school shooting:
Robinson said that after Pierson entered the high school at approximately 12:33 p.m. Friday, near the student parking lot, he asked for the teacher by name. At one point, Pierson went into the library, where Murphy actually was located, but a janitor initiated a lockdown and Murphy was able to escape as Pierson entered the room.
After that, Pierson set off one of the Molotov cocktails, setting at least three bookshelves on fire, investigators told KDVR.com. When an armed school resource officer entered the room, Pierson believed he was cornered and turned his gun on himself, Robinson said. The entire attack lasted approximately 80 seconds and was captured by security cameras.
80 seconds and one student casualty before Pierson faced an armed "school resource officer." As I understand it, as soon as the armed individual showed up Pierson shot himself.
I have to ask the obvious question ... what if there hadn't been someone there with a gun to confront this guy? Would Pierson have gone on to kill and kill and kill again? I don't think anyone knows for certain but even with "just" a shotgun (no "assault rifle" here), a machete and firebombs the havoc he could have wrought is considerable.
"Armed school resource officer" could be anyone, an off duty police officer, teacher or even the janitor who sounded the initial alarm.
"Gun free zones" don't work. Nearly every mass shooting we've suffered over the last couple of decades has occurred where the shooter(s) had little chance of being confronted quickly by armed individuals and usually only stop when the cops show up several minutes into the attack.
