Amid ongoing high-level diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran, it's a symbol of underlying mistrust. Commercial satellite images obtained by CNN reveal that Iran is constructing a large-scale replica of a U.S. military aircraft carrier, complete with fake U.S-style airplanes, near the southern port city of Bandar Abbas. The mock supercarrier seems to have been modeled off of an American Nimitz-class (CVN 68) carrier, down to the number "68" painted on the flight deck, though its intended use remains a mystery. According to one U.S. official, the mock-up is more akin to a Hollywood set than an actual warship. More here: security.blogs.cnn.com/2014/03/21/why-is-iran-building-giant-mock-up-of-u-s-aircraft-carrier/?hpt=hp_t2&hpt=hp_t3Destruction for propaganda purposes sounds about right. But even then the only people they are going to impress is themselves. Let them waste their time, money and resources.

I just did a quick survey of the shipyards around Bandar Abbas and think I've identified the one where this mockup is being built, the layout seems to match. The yard, when the Google Earth photos were taken was servicing at least one fleet auxiliary and a number of small craft and medium to large merchantmen. The slip where that "carrier" was imaged has a framework structure similar to a building's steel framing, definitely not marine.
If you are interested in looking it up for yourself google saffgroup.com, go to the map function and select "satellite view." You'll find the yard just across the harbor, about a mile or so to the northeast. There's not a lot to see at this point.

A training module for visually targeted air attacks, perhaps?

Possibly that 101. We'll have to wait and see what they actually do with it. I'm reminded of the mock Nimitz the Chicoms built in a land locked lagoon or pond. Ground examination showed it to simply be a building resting on solid ground with the pond built around it. files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/38b7e6d99572.jpg

My guess is it's either for training or propaganda.
Possibly both.
What was the Chicom mission for the faux Nimitz?

IIRC it was supposed to be some kind of tourist attraction.

The Iranians needed something to stick under those F-14s they still own, so ...

Even if they could launch, the recovery would be a bitch.
Maybe they should clone a Harrier.

If they did the flight test program should promise crash bonuses for the test pilots, double the virgins.
