Well the NFL draft is this week, and as per usual QBs not really worthy of a first round pick will start being nabbed up early in the first round. Most notable amongst teams being mentioned as likely takers is the Jacksonville Jaguars and Cleveland Browns who hold the 3rd and 4th picks respectively.
The Jaguars played this same act three years ago when they drafted Blane Gabbert out of Missouri. That pick faired so horribly Gabbert has been abandoned by the team and now hopes to make the 49ers roster as a back up for Colin Kaepernick. Kaep, BTW, was taken in the same draft by the 49ers in the second round.
The Browns... well lets see. They rejoined the NFL and in 98 or 99 and celebrated this by drafting QB Tim Couch in a same draft where Donovan Mcnabb, Dante Culpepper, Edgerine James, and Ricky Williams were also available. In 2002 Kelly Holcomb took over for a few games at QB for the Browns and lead them to their lone playoff appearance since rejoining the league. Holcomb, BTW, entered the league as an undrafted free agent. The Browns stuck with Holcomb for another year in 2003 before moving on to the big free agency signing in Jeff Garcia. Woo hooo. They followed this by later drafting Colt McCoy, spending two years on him before giving up, and then drafting Brandon Weeden, whom they are now giving up on.
That's now right, they really gave up on Weeden last year when they started a late round drafted QB, Bryan Hoyer, at QB to start the seaston. Hoyer had a decent start, but then was lost for the season in the second game.
Now both teams are prepared, and very much likely, to again draft a QB amongst a QB class that is universally regarded as not ready to start immediately in the NFL. Unfortunately for whomever they draft, they will indeed, start immediately, and they will start with a less talented RB compliment, a difficient O-line, a WR corps that needs work, and a defense not regared well within their divisions. In short, they will be pushed forward in the hopes of selling a few tickets early in the season and by next year their will already be rumbles about repeating the same pattern.
All I can say is thank God Green Bay has Aaron Rodgers and can be positioned to take advantage of teams picking lesser talent ahead of them. My hope for this year is Alabama's LB CJ Mosely is still on the board when the Packers pick. Excellent fit at LB for the Packers. All other picks in the subsequent rounds will have plenty of talent at the appropriate spot in the draft to address other needs.
Anyway, just my two cents.
