Wanted to give you guys warning - I received a call this afternoon from someone (heavy Indian accent) who claimed to be with Geek Squad. He spoke initially with my wife and she put him on with me.
The deal was, he was claiming that Geek Squad was contacted by "Windows" as their agent, my computer supposedly is sending out malware and viruses and he wanted me to go into internet explorer and log on to a website so he could "show me" the stuff my machine is supposed to be sending out.
DO NOT - REPEAT - DO NOT cooperate with anyone who calls claiming to be with Geek Squad or any other agency wanting you to do this.
I didn't catch his name. The phone number on my caller ID was for "Farmington CT" and the number is 860-777-1234. The web address he wanted me to use is WWW . AMMYY . COM. I did not cooperate with him, good thing too.
I took notes during the call and after hanging up with him I called Geek Squad and eventually talked with someone at their corporate office in Minnisota. She assured me that neither Geek Squad nor the parent company Best Buy makes calls like this. This apparently is something new, she said mine was the first report of this particular fraud she has taken.
The disturbing thing is this turkey had information about my name, phone number and the fact that I occasionally am a Geek Squad customer. ID theft at work here guys.
I'm posting this out in the "open area" of the forum so visitors can also be warned.
