(CNN) -- As the world struggles to come to terms with the horror of another passenger jet falling from the skies, the full picture of how and why Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 came down over eastern Ukraine is far from clear. The United States believes a surface-to-air missile brought the Boeing 777 down over territory held by pro-Russian separatists but hasn't indicated who's responsible -- though both sides in the ongoing civil conflict in Ukraine blame each other. According to a top Ukrainian official, the airliner, which was en route to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam with nearly 300 people on board, was flying at about 10,000 meters (nearly 33,000 feet) over the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine when the missile hit. A number of airlines have since re-routed services away from the region, prompting questions about whether commercial aircraft should be anywhere near conflict zones anyway. www.cnn.com/2014/07/18/world/malaysia-flight-17-analysts/index.html?hpt=hp_c2

I can't believe the stupidity of flying commercial airliners through airspace above a war zone.
I don't think there was any sense that the separatists had technology that could knock an airliner from the sky @ 33,000 Ft.

That same pilot I was listening to noted that there are a number of NOTAMs (Notice to Air Men) warning against routing through this area. He also noted that if he had received routing through that area he would have refused that routing on his own authority. There's a reason the senior pilot on the flight is called "Captain." His airline might not like it, but the Captain is responsible for the safety of every soul aboard. He can (as many have) override directives from the home office as well as ground control on that basis.
The Russians, Ukrainians and the Separatists all have the SA-11/SA-17 which could have complicated determining who shot the airliner down. The clincher (IMO) in making that determination is the SIGINT intercepts mentioned in other articles. The "Russian Separatists" launched that missile. The question in my mind now is how much material support the Kremlin is providing and how extensive their C-3 links are.
