NATO Releases Satellite Evidence That Russia Is Lying About Invading Ukraine NATO released a series of satellite images on Thursday showing what a top general described as "Russian combat soldiers, equipped with sophisticated heavy weaponry ... operating inside Ukraine’s sovereign territory." According to a statement posted on the NATO website, the photos "confirmed what NATO and its Allies had been seeing for weeks from other sources." This is a direct contradiction of recent statements made by Kremlin officials and a pro-Russian separatist leader in Ukraine who said all of the Russian troops who had entered the country were on "their vacations" and assisting the separatists on a volunteer basis. Unfortunately this is an old story being repeated in a different location and with a different cast of characters. IIRC the Soviet involvement in Afghanistan started this way, with secret deployments and falsified death reports and wounded warned of dire consequences for them and their families if they ever spoke of what really happened to them.
"I can be (or take) Kiev in 2 weeks" is, I think, not an idle boast but a statement of real capability. At the moment I think all Putin wants is a land bridge to his new Crimean possession but that could change in a heartbeat.
