(CNN) -- One man more interested than most in what President Barack Obama will have to say in his address to the nation Wednesday night is al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri. In his hideout somewhere in Pakistan or Afghanistan, he will likely be hoping that the President sets out a plan to exterminate the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), a group that has eclipsed al Qaeda and made al-Zawahiri seem virtually irrelevant. Al-Zawahiri and the core of al Qaeda are locked in battle with ISIS for the leadership of the global jihadist movement -- offering very different visions and strategies. ISIS was expelled from al Qaeda in February after rejecting al-Zawahiri's demand that it restrict its activities to Iraq. ISIS has captured the imagination of a new generation of jihadists -- from Arab and European states alike -- with its ruthless pursuit of a Caliphate, dramatic territorial gains and relentless propaganda machine. Its chilling brutality toward non-Muslims and Muslims who don't share its rigid interpretation of Islam echo the behavior of its predecessor, al Qaeda in Iraq, whose vicious attacks on Shia Muslims and moderate Sunnis drew the ire of the late al Qaeda leader, Osama bin Laden. Ahmed Abdi Godane, also known as Mukhtar Abu Zubayr, is the leader of Al-Shabaab. A reward up to $7 million has been offered by the U.S. government. Too bad this disagreement won't cause the two groups to come to blows, they are more alike than not at the moment. I get the feeling, and that's all it is at the moment, ISIS will eventually supercede AQ's leadership globally as it has in the Syria/Iraq theater unless someone splatters "Caliph" al Baghdadi all over the countryside. Since the "passing" of bin Laden, AQs leadership (al Zawahiri) has become less and less influential in my view.

Al-Qaeda India branch’s first attack ends in dismal failure as jihadists 'raid wrong ship'
Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent, the new group announced last week by Ayman al-Zawahiri to bolster his flagging fortunes, suffered a setback when three of its fighters were killed and seven arrested in its first ever terror attack. Heavily armed militants attacked a naval dock in Karachi's sea port on Saturday night and targeted what they believed was an American aircraft carrier, but instead found a Pakistan Navy frigate and were overwhelmed before they could cause any damage, investigators said. Three jihadis were killed in the attack, four were captured and another three arrested the following day on information from interrogations. Two Pakistan Navy guards were wounded in the fighting. More here: www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/pakistan/11092387/Al-Qaeda-India-branchs-first-attack-ends-in-dismal-failure-as-jihadists-raid-wrong-ship.htmlAn American aircraft carrier in an Indian port? More likely faulty intel that mis-ID'd an INDIAN carrier moored at that pier earlier, but moved between the recon and the attack. Moved? Ships tend to do that Haji. Is AQ becoming the "gang that can't shoot straight?" Stay tuned for the answer. Glad to hear the Indian Navy was on the ball.

I think the malcontents of the Islamic world are no seeing ISIS as the strong horse.
