ECHO LAKE, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Jerry Brown ordered officials Wednesday to impose statewide mandatory water restrictions for the first time in history as surveyors found the lowest snow level in the Sierra Nevada snowpack in 65 years of record-keeping. Standing in dry, brown grass at a site that normally would be snow-covered this time of year, Brown announced he had signed an executive order requiring the State Water Resources Control Board to implement measures in cities and towns to cut the state's overall water usage by 25 percent compared with 2013 levels. The move will affect residents, businesses, farmers and other users. "We're in a historic drought and that demands unprecedented action," Brown said at a news conference at Echo Summit in the Sierra Nevada, where state water officials found no snow on the ground for the first time in their April manual survey of the snowpack. The media is portraying this as the worst drought EVER in California, and I do mean EVER, i.e. as long as people cared about droughts.

I'm wondering how long it will be until the jet streams shift back to their normal courses. You guys got a massive drought from it, we got clobbered with extraordinary cold and snow in the northeast and eastern US.

As I understand it from various reports the current drought has lasted close to a century with the disruption of the usual meager rain/snow fall you are currently experiencing since about 2009, maybe a bit earlier.
One thing that can be done to assist with providing potable water is utilizing waste heat from your powerplants along the coast to distill fresh from salt water. It's not new tech by any means and the Saudis use it on an industrial scale along both the Red Sea and Persian Gulf coasts. I believe the Israelis are having to build similar installations to help provide for their growing population, especially since the Jordan River system is overtaxed by both Israel and Jordan (almost no water is making it to the river outlet into the Dead Sea.)
Another industrial scale technique is reverse osmosis. I'm not as familiar with it but understand it works quite well.
Both are more costly than tapping mother nature and building pipelines but do make use of existing distribution infrastructure.
The question in my mind is would Governor Moonstruck, er Moonbeam, er Brown and the environmentalists in your legislature go for desalinization?

I think most of the people pushing back on this are those wha have been telling the Dems in Sacramento that we nee\d more storage capacity for decades.
Unfortunately, they are in the pockets of the Green lobby whose latest silliness is to destroy Hetch Hetchy reservoir andrestore the valley to its pristine state.
The lunatics truly do run the asylum here and it ain't purty.

See, I've been back home and dealt with my relatives, who are all stanch California Democratic liberals who fight kicking and screaming if they have to go further north than Vacaville, further south than San Jose, further East than Walnut Creek, and further West than San Francisco. I've been told by a gathering of my uncles, aunts, and cousins that "We are sorry, but during your time in the military and in Denver, you've become a Conservative". To which I reply, "No, am NOT a Conservative... you people are very simply out of your Goddamned MINDS".
You need WATER. NOT high-sounding ideas that you can't drink.

Warrior, I understand you guys are getting more snow. I know it's not unusual at your latitude and altitude for this time of year. Just count your blessings and be careful.
Just think, you could be in fire season already like a lot of California is and has been for a couple of years now.

I've been exposed to a lot of ideas over the years, and did my best to choose the best ones no matter who might disagree. After all, that's part of the freedom I suited up for in the first place, and I sure as hell will die defending it if necessary. That much hasn't changed over the years, and it never will.
