... and World of Warplanes has another one in Beta Testing called (imaginatively) World of Warships. There are some videos of Alpha and Beta test play posted to YouTube, looks like it could be interesting to someone like me. I'd love to get my hands on a tincan or cruiser.
They currently run mixed fleets of US and Japanese warships with each player "earning" ships of the next level as experience is gained. The ships are of WWI and WWII eras with a selection of ship types for each level; destroyer, cruiser, battleship and aircraft carrier. Each succeeding level provides ships of greater capability and sophistication.
You control speed, course, ammunition choice (H.E. or Armor Piercing) and aim. There are torpedos for ships and aircraft that carried them in real life, and like real life Japanese Long Lance torpedos are much longer ranged and powerful than their US counterparts.
And in the game you will probably see American and Japanese warships teaming up against a team of similar makeup.
They have a good selection of ships now and say they will be adding warships from Britain, Germany, Italy and France.
And no, I don't know when they are going to be open for new players. I have an application in for Beta testing but think my application went in too late.

Sounds a lot like World of Tanks where teams are made up of vehicles from different nations, and different types.... Light tanks, mediums, heavies, tank destroyers, and arty. There are several play modes, random battles made up by the games "match maker" where there is really no communication except for typed "battle chat", which is hard to use when you're driving and shooting, and thus for not much coordination. Then there are modes where you can use a headset and communicate like tank platoons, 2 or 3 players, tank companies where the team is made up from company members who are online, and clans that play together on a schedule. I'm guessing World of Warships is probably similar. I thought WOW was already available, because I've heard them talking about it for quite awhile on WOT. I know there are 2 formats, one for the computer, and one for the x box so maybe one was available, and they're coming out with the other. Here's a link to WOW, see where this gets you. worldofwarships.com/As you can see, like WOT, the graphics are great but if you start playing be careful..... It's addicting.

Yeah, WOT is put out by the same folks. I tried to sign up for WOW but they aren't accepting new players for the Closed Beta testing. I think the teams for Warships is put together in the same way you describe for WOT. Watching recorded game play on YouTube, it seems strange to watch US cruisers operating with Kongo and Yamato class battlewagons.
Just what I need, another addiction to eat up my sleep time on work nights.

Call me a history purist but I just can't get behind what should be hostile assets fighting on the same side. There's something about Yamato and Missouri or KGV and Bismarck collaborating in joint operations that's just wrong.

It raised my eyebrows too 101, torpedo planes from USS Essex launching torps against US cruisers or DDs? Only in a bad dream or a game like this one.
Of course, with a twisted imagination an amateur sci-fi writer (me) might team up battleships Hood and Bismarck to cover each other. Maybe you can read about it one day (if I ever publish.)

I guess I forgot to update this post. I was given a code to get in on the final couple of weeks of Closed Beta Testing and now the game is open to everyone who wishes to take part as part of their Open Beta Testing program.
If you don't care to lay out any money you can still play, they start you out with a low tier warship or 2 so you can "get your feet wet." The "starter" ships are US and Japanese large gunboats which are actually fairly well armed with 5" or 6" deck guns. You earn "experience" points in each round you take part in, the more effective you are the more experience you earn. You can use these points to either upgrade your current ship or "purchase" another.
Each round is fleet vs fleet with 10 to 12 players per side and for balance most players have roughly the same experience.
There are 4 warship types represented; destroyers, cruisers, battleships and aircraft carriers. Each type has its own "tech" line or tree which starts out with early examples of each type at tiers I and II with more powerful or capable ships at tier III and higher up to Tier X. Some of the types represented are "paper ships," designed but never completed like the USS Montana BB, but most are ship classes that served with distinction like the IJN Fubuki or USS Fletcher DDs.
Currently only the USN and IJN are represented as full tech trees, however there are HMS Warspite BBs and 2 Soviet cruisers available for purchase or as awards to those who take part in various "challenges" or in closed testing of possible improvements to the game. I have a "Murmansk" light cruiser (actually USS Milwaukee which was loaned to the Red Navy) which I like. Fast, manuverable and a buttload of 6" rifles. An old "Omaha" class, she can dish it out though she's as well armored as any tincan.
As I noted, the game is still in development but is available world wide. I'm logged on the North America server though there is also an EU server and (IIRC) an asian server.
Don't make the mistake of thinking this is an actual simulator, it's more arcade than sim but it's challenging and keeps me coming back. Like most players I get sunk in more games than not but still usually have fun.
A German navy tech tree is promised for October with the Royal Navy coming out shortly afterward. And yes, we almost always have ships of all nations on both sides. I often escort US battleships or carriers with Murmansk or with a Japanese destroyer I like. The most badass cruiser in the game currently is the USS Cleveland CL, often we end up with 2 or 3 on both sides in the middle and upper tier games. While I have "collected" a Cleveland and run it regularly I usually prefer my Murmansk.
And since busting my ankle I've been playing the hell out of this game when I'm not writing or doing one of the other things I'm capable of with my butt planted.
