CNN)—Police shootings stoke controversy as the public dissects the details of each incident and decides whether the use of force was unwarranted or if the officer acted in self-defense in the face of a truly dangerous criminal. This isn't one of those cases. On Thursday, Officer Jesse Kidder could have opened fire on a man in New Richmond, Ohio, and likely would never have heard a breath of the protest that followed the shootings of Eric Harris and Walter Scott. What might have been a "suicide by cop" ended in the suspect's arrest and booking, thanks to what Kidder's colleagues say was his "great restraint." If there were a checklist for when it's OK to shoot a suspect, Kidder could have ticked most of the boxes. Double homicide suspect, check.
Possibly armed, check.
Verbally threatening police, check.
Refusing to remove hands from pockets, check.
Charging at an officer, check. "Law enforcement officers all across the nation deal with split-second decisions that mean life or death. I wanted to be absolutely sure before I used deadly force," Kidder told CNN affiliate WLWT. us.cnn.com/2015/04/19/us/ohio-new-richmond-officer-does-not-shoot-suspect/index.html

Police officer is a job I don't have the temperment for. Not many people have the temperment, Self-control and dicipline required for it. One of the few times I've seen something of real interest on our local nows was about a month ago when they went to the Denver Police Department, and showed the training they recieve in dealing with potentially deadly situations...situations that showed just what a police officer can be confronted with. They are computer simulations of such situations, and you may have about one to three seconds to react properly. Failure to do so ends up with an innocent person being dead, or YOU being dead.
And they are graphically realistic. God, what I'd give to show them to you. I realize there's a lot of uneccessary violence out there perpetrated by cops (and not necessarily always involving a white police officer and a black person, either.)
I also realize that those are an infinitesimal fraction of all police officers. I've never had a bad situation with a cop in my life, anywhere, anytime. I HAVE had police save my bacon. And I think those facts speak for themselves. just my two cents worth, gentlemen.
