Above the South China Sea (CNN)—The Chinese navy issued warnings eight times as a U.S. surveillance plane on Wednesday swooped over islands that Beijing is using to extend its zone of influence. The series of man-made islands and the massive Chinese military build-up on them have alarmed the Pentagon, which is carrying out the surveillance flights in order to make clear the U.S. does not recognize China's territorial claims. The militarized islands have also alarmed America's regional allies. Former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell told CNN's Erin Burnett Wednesday night that the confrontation indicates there is "absolutely" a risk of the U.S. and China going to war sometime in the future. More here including a video report with images of 2 of the "islands": www.cnn.com/2015/05/20/politics/south-china-sea-navy-flight/index.htmlI worry that sooner or later there will be an incident with a commercial airliner, several major air routes pass through the area. Short of going up and looking there is no way of telling a Boeing or Airbus twin engine airliner from a Navy P-8, built from a Boeing 737 airframe.

I remember KAL007 shipmate.
I also remember a certain PLAAF pilot driving a supersonic MiG who managed to collide with a prop driven P-3 Orion by being a dumbass. All it takes is one with more feathers than brains stuffing his helmet and more balls than good sense to cause a tragedy.
Can't happen? There are guys and gals like that in every military.
