(CNN)—In the United States, servicemen and women learn the Soldier's Creed during basic training. It's simple and direct, and makes clear a warrior's cardinal sin in one line: "I will never quit." Other modern armies have similar statements of faith. The idea of dropping weapons and running away from an enemy tends to shock. Defense Secretary Ash Carter told CNN that the Iraqi army showed "no will" to fight. To some, his words suggested weakness and cowardice. But a number of scholars and military experts say the problem with the Iraqi military is far more complex. www.cnn.com/2015/05/26/world/iraqi-army-explainer/

Part of the problem IMO is they haven't had the time necessary to build the confidence they need, the necessary tradition of disipline that we immerse our new troops in. Part of the problem is they are still thinking like undisiplined warriors and not like SOLDIERS. (Yaa, yaa, that's coming from a sailor.) You need disipline in the ranks all the way to both ends of the Chain of Command necessary to build the team, to give those troops the confidence they need to stand firm and not break and run when the SHTF.
The Iraqi's don't have that tradition or confidence in themselves and the in the guy standing to them, the confidence that the guy next to him will stand and not run. They lost that when the Iraqi Army was disbanded and will take years to rebuild, assuming they have years.
They've got a long way to go. The big question is do they have the time they need? I don't think so and the ISIS barbarian warriors sure as hell ain't going to give it to them.
Thanks a big stinking diaper load Bremer.
NOTE: I wrote most of this and THEN read the CNN article. I agree with them and modified my missive a bit, accordingly.

Many of the real badasses who used to be in the Iraqi army such as the Republican Guard and Fedayeen Saddam are now fighting with ISIS, methinks.

I think that's possible for many of them 101, but not all. We need to remember that the much vaunted Iraqi Army was fought to a standstill by Iran, decimated during Desert Storm and then not just defeated but broken by OIF. Then the worst humiliation of all, thrown away like used toilet paper.
How do you recover from that?
