Looking at this proposal for "Dreadought 2050," I have to wonder what hoops the Brit MOD will have to jump through in order to get the funding from Parlament. Each one of these things will probably cost more than HMS Queen Elizabeth.
Some of the "out of the box" thinking is worth looking at for development even though the ship itself may never be built.

Remember: The ORIGINAL Dreadnought precipitated an arms race that damned near bankrupted the great military powers. And Great Britain and the United States used the Washington Treaty of 1922 to come up with the 5-5-3 ratio that was designed to handicap Japan, their future naval adversary, and unknowingly pushed them to find other means, such as destroyers and cruisers armed with Long Lance torpedoes and...you guessed it... Aircraft carriers. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Naval_ConferenceWe are seeing the cost of maintaining a high tech arsenal. Seawolf submarines, Gerald R. Ford-class carriers, and F-22s cost money. The Russians will not buid as many of THEIR stealth fighters as they would like, either. And the U.S. being 19 trillion in debt is one hell of a handicap.
