I'm getting old too mate. Some of these designs are either just to exotic for my tastes or seem just plain wrong and perhaps not capable of standing up to the sea at its worst (Zumwalt.)
Some of the European frigates seem top heavy and would probably roll like a bowling pin in heavy weather. I've ridden a destroyer and an assault ship (40k tons) in weather right out of Deadliest Catch. I can't see some of these pretty boats handling 40 foot seas or a hurricane well.

Oh yeah, the old Fletcher is a classic. Fast, manuverable and powerful. Its only real weakness was the early war torpedoes that were so undependable that IMHO the weight could have been used for something else.
The destroyer I rode was as large and heavy as an early war cruiser and at 8,000 tons nearly 4 times as heavy as Fletcher. But in a gun duel the Fletcher would still kick the ass of every modern destroyer or cruiser.
