To a neophite like myself it seems to me that perhaps the effort to bring down Russia's Syria client Assad is a big part of the problem. Admittedly Assad is a tyrant but, at the moment, more valuable to both Russia and us where he is.
Part of the reason ISIS has gained traction as it has is because of vacuum left as Assad's power and army was weakened by this country's effort to pull him down, the same reason ISIS gained so much power in the vacuum left in Libya when we pulled Gadaffi down and the Muslim Brotherhood came to power in Egypt after Mubarak fell.
To lessen the crisis in Syria perhaps we should stand aside and let Russia beef up its presence in Syria. Even if the situation stabilizes now with Assad still in charge of what's left of his government he no longer poses a threat to Jordan or Israel.
With a larger Russian presence in the area we might even hope that al-Bagdhadi or one of his deputies will make the mistake of doing something totally stupid to piss the Russians off, make an implacable enemy fully capable of taking the actions that we won't, ala the Spetznaz response the Russians unleashed after radicals in Lebanon kidnapped and killed Russians.
Realistically, while Russia probably has no interest in confronting ISIS directly at the moment, their presence may be enough to place a brake on ISIS activities.

I wonder if ISIS is smart enough not to tweak the Bear's nose.

I wonder if ISIS is smart enough not to tweak the Bear's nose. I wonder if they are arrogant enough to try.
