"Defense Secretary Ash Carter today revealed that the U.S. will openly begin "direct action on the ground" against ISIS forces in Iraq and Syria. In his testimony before the Senate Armed Services committee on Tuesday, Carter said "we won't hold back from supporting capable partners in opportunistic attacks against ISIL...or conducting such mission directly, whether by strikes from the air or direct action on the ground." www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/sec-carter-direct-u-s-action-ground-iraq-syria-n452131Well, it's about fucking time. Bravo, Mr. President on your timely and decisive actions. 1/20/2017 can't get here soon enough.

This is not a rebuttal. Honest.
It's questions based on what has happened, and what is happening. NOBODY I know knows what is GOING to happen. That story goes back to the Old Testament, at least.
Seriously, who do you think should lead us in this region, and what do you think their course of action should be? Oh, and I almost forgot. You can throw American politics into it, since we are coming up on an election, and Israeli politics, and the various Arab nations' politics as well, since all of that will have a considerable effect on the outcome.
This is the Middle East.
Everyone who has become involved here has tried and failed. Hell, you yourself spent a considerable amount of time learning this in school. WE ALL DID.
Simple as that.

I don' take it as a rebuttal, Warrior, but valid points for discussion. My point is that the asshat in the oval office sat on his fucking hands as ISIS spread across and occupied large portions of Iraqi real estate virtually unopposed when they were extremely vulnerable to air interdiction and conventional forces and could have been destroyed in detail had we brought to bear anything more severe than the late-to-the dance limp-wristed response we gave. Regardless of WHO leads US, WE need to lead when confronting this kind of evil that threatens not only the region but the peace of the world and, make no mistake about it, when the US abdicates it's leadership role, the gates of hell open to fill the vacuum. Cheers!

One can only wonder how ISIS would have been checked if a permanent troop presence in Iraq had been negotiated in 2009.

We're sending all of 50 troops as advisors and only after Russia decided to get involved in Syria. Purely political and I'm doubtful it will do much to change the situation on the ground.

Indeed, if a long term or permanent presence had been successfully negotiated with Baghdad and properly implemented to provide a core to support the national security and police apparatus as it was trained and put in place things might well be different. But we'll never know now.

Place an armored corps or two with LOTS of air support (every A-10 and helo gunship in the inventory) on the Mediterranian coast of Syria, arrange to pick them back up in Kuwait City or Basra Iraq and then turn them loose with orders to take no shit from anyone anywhere and march right through the center of the so-called "Caliphate." If you take fire from a Mosque, hospital or school turn it into a crater. Give them the Patton or Zhukov treatment. Is it any wonder my Social Work PHD sister considers me to not be PC?

I was watching Chris Wallace this morning. He had an Obama advisor on who all but confirmed the latest attack will not result in a significant shift in US strategy against ISIS.
I hopeful this aid is just giving the talking points while a real response is formulated and given. If we want to be serious about taking this group out we need to talk about ground forces. Whether that effort is led by France, or by a coalition, so be it, more of the same is not enough.

I saw that same interview on Fox News Sunday. Those dum-masses want to continue to bring Syrian "refugees" here, the first are already in country.
2 Governors (Michigan and Alabama) have refused to take any further refugees, I wish the other 48 would do the same.
France has responded by stepping up their air strikes against the "Caliphate," that needs to continue and be expanded to take out the oil transfer centers and pipelines ISIS is using to move and sell it's oil on the black markets in Turkey, Syria and Iraq. We need to do the same as a starter.
