The exact cause of the crash should be known shortly, the data recorders were recovered almost immediately according to reports I read. Some reports say the Airbus plane was at cruising altitude(36k feet) when the pilot reported trouble and crashed shortly after.
One official said the "plane split in two" with the tail coming off. Whether it came off in the air or on impact isn't clear to me. If it came off in midair then I think a case could be made for a bomb onboard which would not be impossible for ISIS to manage.
I personally doubt that a SAM brought the plane down given the information currently at hand. 36k feet is way too high for any MANPAD that I know of to reach and I doubt the Islamists have a truck or tracked SAM launcher in the Sinai.
If this does turn out to be ISIS' handiwork I would expect Putin to "loose the dogs of war," a mission tailor-made for Spetznaz and the regular military in concert. Getting Egyptian cooperation wouldn't be at all difficult and I would expect the Israelis and Jordanians would at least "look the other way" in regards to actions in both Egypt and in Syria.

Gary Powers' U-2 was doing about sixty thousand feet when he was shot down by a SAM over the Soviet Union. That was 1960. Today, needless to say, it can be done.

The question is, how would ISIS have the access to and the skills to use a weapon with that capability? Gary Powers' U-2 was doing about sixty thousand feet when he was shot down by a SAM over the Soviet Union. That was 1960. Today, needless to say, it can be done.

Shipmate, I wrote "MANPAD" or shoulder launched portable SAM. To my knowledge you need a missile of considerably greater size and capability to reach airliner cruising altitudes. The missile that brought down Powers' U-2 was a "Flying Telephone Pole," otherwise known as a SA-1 or SA-2. Not even today's latest model STINGER, European or Russian MADPAD can reach above 18 - 20k feet and most if not all of the MANPADs in ISIS' possession have trouble reaching half that altitude. One theory going around right now is that the plane may have suffered structural failure from a botched repair by Airbus of a tail strike that occured on a landing or take off several years ago. My favorite theory is still the bomb theory.

The evidence continues to trickle out, bodies and bits of plane from the aft section reportedly show effects of heat and blast but so far no reports of discovery of explosive residue in tests. But also no indication of an impact from outside as yet.
No information from the data recorders released yet.
Both the Russians and Egyptians are keeping the information close to the vest so far.
All we can do is watch and play the guessing game until they release their findings.
Harumph!

The voice recorder apparently quit working immediately after a "loud noise" similar to an explosion was heard. One report I heard said it was possible that a small bomb was placed near fuselage fuel lines but no confirmation has been released.
