Two people were "incinerated" in the U.S. airstrike targeting an ISIS terrorist known as "Jihadi John," a senior defense official told NBC News on Friday, but officials could not say for certain whether the notorious militant was killed.
The U.S. has video showing an individual believed to be Mohammed Emwazi exiting a building in the ISIS stronghold of Raqqa and getting into a vehicle, the official said. A U.S.-operated MQ-9 Reaper drone, one of three that had been tracking Emwazi, then struck the car, a senior military official told NBC News.
The Pentagon was unable to immediately confirm that Emwazi was killed in the strike. An official told NBC News it could take months before the U.S. could definitively confirm his death.
A senior U.S. official earlier told NBC News that the Kuwait-born British citizen was directly "targeted" by the strike.
