There was a good article today in the Washington Post (of all newspapers) about how Republicans are picking the wrong issues to fight their battles on. Republicans won on Election Day not only because of their strong support from conservative Christians, but also because moderates voted heavily in favor of them. Recently, the Republicans have been focusing on radical issues like the Filibuster, Terri Schiavo, Social Security over-haul, etc. Now believe me, I supported the Republicans on all three of these issues. But then again I'm not exactly a moderate.
However, the majority of America disagrees with Republicans on these issues. Although it has become more likely that Republicans will succeed on the filibuster issue, nearly 2/3 of Americans oppose their tactics. An overwhelming margin of Americans opposed the federal government getting involved in the Schiavo case (as did I) and a slim majority rejects Bush's SS plan.
I have to say that I'm worried about the Republican Party because they seem to be picking the wrong battles. Bush has taken this "I have a mandate" thing way too far and is now only serving the far-right of the Party. This is exactly what caused the Dems to lose in '04 and I fear the Republicans are going down the same path. Interestingly enough, the Post had a poll about who Americans would rather have as their president - Bill Clinton or George Bush? Clinton won by a 53/43 margin, which really surprised me.
It's time to get back to the issues that the majority of Americans support. Tax reform, IMMIGRATION REFORM (GOD DAMMIT!!!), the economy, energy independence and the war on terrorism. Ultimately these issues are incredibly more important and pressing than everything else that the Republicans have been talking about since November.
