We all believe him when you say, `Stay the course.' That's the president's policy, which hasn't been changing, which is a policy of failure. I don't agree with that. But I think what we need to do is recognize what we all agree on, which is you've got to begin to set benchmarks for accomplishment. You've got to begin to transfer authority to the Iraqis. And there is no reason, Bob, that young American soldiers need to be going into the homes of Iraqis in the dead of night, terrorizing kids and children, you know, women, breaking sort of the customs of the--of--the historical customs, religious customs. Hopefully we'll see the troops start to come home in 2006 and eventually just have a force in Kuwait so we can declare victory and shut these people up,

The truth is we are going to most likely have a presence in Iraq well into the future. The insurgency is not going to last as long as our presence in Iraq, making it less controversial. Like the presence we still have in Germany. The Iraqis are going to want us to stay as a security guarantee. Perhaps I'm wrong and they will ask us to leave. If so great that is what we should do I just don't think that is how it will play out.

Some Iraqi leaders have started to call for a withdrawl, but Jaffarri, and Talibani have been compaigning for more troops.

Either way we'll have a force in Kuwait to react in a worst case scenario.

You may be correct Battleborn they may ask us to leave, I just don't think so. Despite all the hoopla we are seen as the honest broker in the neighborhood even by Sunni's. Do you think once the insurgency is convincingly defeated that there wont be Sunni's looking for protection from Shia reprisals for past Sunni repression?

There are a lot of criminal gangs out there kidnapping and looting - for a profit. There is high drug usage, raping and foreign governments which are associated with international criminal gangs as well.

Note that Muslim governments are NOT demanding the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq. Just narco-terrorist nations like Iran and Syria - governments that rely on the trade in drugs, weapons and people to fill their coffers.

My thought is that if the Iraqi government will go along with it, as we pull our "footprint" in, we might be able to set up a permanent or semipermanent presence or base at one of the large isolated airfields, H-1 or H-2 for example. Far enough from Baghdad and the other major population centers to be kind of "out of sight," and thus not "occupiers" but still in country, making a military move against Iraq by Iran less attractive.

I threw this in because of something Persian Pride brought up, that the Iraqi Army lacks the heavy weapons, tanks, aircraft and training necessary to defend against a possible Iranian move and will lack them for some time.

I wonder if the Russians would be willing to deliver a Division's worth of T-80 tanks and BMP IFV's, and how long it would take.

What was Saddam's original arsenal? T-72s and T-80s?

But what armor do they need? Probably the smaller BTR 60 or 70 would best meet their needs for urban patrol. I am sure the French, too, would be glad to sell them anything.
