But what armor do they need? Probably the smaller BTR 60 or 70 would best meet their needs for urban patrol. I am sure the French, too, would be glad to sell them anything.

The best tank they had was an export version of the T-72, mostly in the Republican Guard divisions. APC's were primarily BTR 60/70 types with some MTLB tracked types. They also had a number of BRDM 4-wheelers and French made arty. The vast majority of tanks were the older T-55 and T-62 exports.

Most of the T-72's got smoked during the march to Baghdad when the Republican Guard tank divisions were turned into speed bumps by the Army and Marine divisions. Most of the surviving armor is the older stuff that was abandoned on the side of the road or never got out of the depots or hiding places (hospitals and Mosques.)

The main reason I thought of the Russians was because they have such a vast amount of surplus equipment that they would probably be able to deliver enough to outfit full divisions with no real delay. Most western nations (us included) don't have that much available for quick delivery.

Besides, Russian ground vehicles are frankly designed for techs with little formal training to be able to work on much of the vehicle, are rugged and are already familiar to a large number of former Iraqi military personnel.

You're correct though, the 8 wheel BTR and 4 wheel BRDM types would be good vehicles for urban patrol, while I would favor the tracked AT missile firing BMP for open ground, and I think the T-80 with well trained (meaning American trained) crews would be a match for anything Iran or Syria could throw at them. Back them up with Russian MI-24s or later OR US Huey Cobras.

Send some of their best officers and battalions to Fort Irwin to attend the NTC and give them a real leg up.

Air Force - How about 100 F-16s from storage at Davis-Mothan, upgrade to F-16C fighter/bomber standards and a few exNavy E2C for early warning/AWACS like the Israelis? Anyone think this might give the goons in Tehran heartburn?

Iraq is our problem, we broke it, we need to fix it and leave them able to stand up to their neighbors if need be. Just my opinion.

I am very interested in the New Iraqi Army!

What they need is some heavy armor in the form of T-72s, and light armor/personel carriers in the form of M113s.They would also be helped alot by having 122 and 155 mm heavy artillery.

But then again they wont even get the chance to use these weapons unless they are trained well enough.I have been following some of the Iraqi Special Forces and Commando units and they look very promising!

By the way, my brother lives near Brockton MA, has for around 30 years. Bill says that no matter how you feel about Kennedy you know where he stands on things. But Kerry? He has NO stance, no record of doing anything in congress. He's gotta be the biggest bum in DC. Which is no surprise since he was a bum in Nam, then a bum afterward. At least he's consistant!
