Things are in a big uproar here.
The parole board (appointed by Richardson) let out a convicted murderer (Michael Astorga) who had served about half of an eleven year prison sentence.
Then Astorga killed a cop that pulled him over for a routine traffic stop. He's now on the run and the finger pointing has begun.
In the midst of this major man-hunt, it turns out that the Governor (Bill Richardson) had a policy of letting criminals out on early release programs to help ease the overcrowding problem.
The Republicans want his head for it.
The Republicans want Richardson's entire parole board GONE. They want Richardson impeached. They want to build more prisons.
Right now emotions are high. I think this could turn into something that makes Richardson vulnerable in the next election.
One can only hope...
I just hope they can nail Astorga before he can get into Mexico.

This should be another thing to bring up to those anti-deathpenaty folks.
I believe that would ease the overcrowding program and NM would still have a police officer in their ranks.

But if he's executed it could hurt his feelings! I'm really sick of the lefties endangering the rest of us because of their touchie feely bullshit. Now it's gotten another cop killed. Could the policemans family sue the state over this?

Could the policemans family sue the state over this? Excellent question. I doubt it though. When I joined the military they made a bid deal of the fact that our families COULD NOT sue the Federal Government for ANYTHING (related to our service), EVER. With COPs, as dangerous as that is, I'd be surprised if the State left itself open for wrongful death lawsuits. However, I do no know the real answer. I do know a COP though. I will ask him.

I think with the military, the next of kin can sue...but I try to avoid being a "Shithouse Lawyer"...I mean "Barracks" lawyer.

What about the Pat Tillman case? Didn't his parents have to sue to get the details of his death released to them?

Yeah, but suing the government for information and monetary settlements are two different things.
Here's a question for you: Was this piece of trash an illegal alien? Why only 11 years for murder?

Yeah, but suing the government for information and monetary settlements are two different things. Here's a question for you: Was this piece of trash an illegal alien? Why only 11 years for murder? E No he was legal. I have no idea why the original sentence was only 11 years, but they let him out in 6. Not only that, but he violated his parole and they let him slide because the violations were "minor" they said. He's been in trouble since he was 14. His rap sheet is a mile long (it's so long that it seems endless - seriously). His mother called in to the local talk radio show the other day. The show held her off the air until they could verify that it was really her - it was. She went on a whiney "my poor Michael" rant saying that he didn't have anything to do with the murder of the cop and "he didn't belong to NO GANGS" (mexican accent). She said she didn't know why he was on the run, but that she said that "My poor Michael is probably very scared right now." Puh - fucking - Leeeease! They haven't found the fuck yet. I figure he's probably in Mexico by now. His wife/girlfriend (whichever) just went into the hospital "in-labor" three or four days ago. What a wonderful family those people have, huh? The facts that they NOT ONLY let him out to begin with, but then let him slide with parole violations is what REALLY has people pissed off.

Okay Bob, you've finally convinced me that Richardson is an asshole. I used to think he was a good guy.
You happy?

Okay Bob, you've finally convinced me that Richardson is an asshole. I used to think he was a good guy. You happy? lol Well Mario, every journey begins with a single step. You've made your first. lol I hope this Astorga guy comes back to haunt Bill Richardson like Willie Horton did to Michael Dukakis. It's very similar. Dukakis and Richardson are just a couple of criminal coddling demonkraps who would LOVE to tell us how to live our lives. Why would Hillary and Richardson want idiots like this criminal to be able to VOTE? The message is, "Vote for us and we'll let your ass out!" We cannot allow that shit! These people HAVE to go down!
