There was a good editorial today in the WSJ, which I can't link to because you need to subscribe to the magazine. So you'll just have to take my word for it.
But anyway, is anyone else getting sick and tired of the way Europe is handling Iran? In order to restore relations with the Europeans, President Bush has decided to let Europe handle the Iran case itself. I guess this is the last great test of Europe to see if it can actually do anything itself. The previous ones being World War II, the Cold War, the Yugoslavia crisis, etc. So here we are, with the UK, France and Germany basically begging Iran to not develop nuclear weapons in return for political and economic incentives. So tell me again - what's to stop Iran (or any other country for that matter) from holding the world hostage every time it wants something? Let's say this time they are satisfied with economic incentives. What if next time they want the trade ban that we imposed on them lifted? And the time after that they want to buy Western military technology? Where does it end?
For all of their wars with evil, Europe has not yet begun to understand how to deal with it. You don't negotiate from a position of weakness - give me one example of from history of this working and I promise to shut up for the rest of my life. When was a weak power ever able to cajole a stronger power to do its will? The very thought is crazy because it defies all common sense and logic. Two things that Europeans and American liberals are sorely lacking in these days.
O, but this was the best part of the article. Kofi Annan and the rest of America-haters at the UN are blaming the United States for destroying the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. And guess who else is attacking America? None other than former President of the United States Jimmy Carter! "Jimmy Carter also piled on, calling the U.S. 'the major culprit in the erosion of the NPT.'" Thanks President Carter. Even though you aren't (and never were) worthy of that title...
I don't know about my fellow Americans, but I am not about to watch Europe drop the ball on Iran - just as they did the entire 20th Century. Talk, talk, talk - that's all Europe wants to do. The fight against evil is not one for the weak at heart and therefore its time for the Europeans to step aside. America is on a mission to destroy tyranny and protect democracy in this world. If you don't have the stomach for it - stand aside.
Just let us do our job and get the hell outta the way.
