Japan is looking to establish diplomatic ties to N. Korea in upcoming talks. I'd like the idea of easing the suffering of the citizens, but I wonder what this money would really be used for. Kim Jong Il shouldn't be trusted to put the plight of his countryman above military aims. www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/asiapcf/12/25/japan.nkorea.reut/index.html

Under Billy Jeff we sent $billions in money, food, fuel and other aid to NK in exchange for Pyongyang shutting down the nuke weapons programs.
Now they have nukes, our aid was diverted to feed and equip their military and now the Japs want to feed them MORE money?
Screw them, let the shithole implode.

This is the same govt that fired a missle across Japan about a decade ago. Now Japan wants to pay them and normalize diplomatic relations? Unfortunatly we can't just say fuck'em, but our govt should put pressure on Tokyo to press reform in NK.

Sounds like appeasement to me.
Didn't I read somewhere recently that Japan is expanding her "Defense Forces ?"

Sounds like appeasement to me. Didn't I read somewhere recently that Japan is expanding her "Defense Forces ?" That's my understanding Rex. Navy and Air Force are getting small expansions, but the Army is to grow markedly especially in the SPECOPS and air mobile areas. They currently have 4 or 5 AEGIS destroyers similar to our BURKE class ships. I think they are thinking of adding 2 or 3 more, primarily because of the ballistic missile threat from NK. AEGIS ships equipped with the STANDARD 3 SAM are capable of engaging and shooting down short and medium range ballistic missiles. 2 of our ships are in the process of finishing up a test series to bring STANDARD 3 with its ABM capability into the fleet. It won't be perfect but it's considerably better than just wishing the incoming away. The Japanese KONGO class DDG should be compatable.

I just don't get the motivation for this deal.
What do the Japanese gain from having diplomatic ties with that hellhole?

I just don't get the motivation for this deal. What do the Japanese gain from having diplomatic ties with that hellhole? As the Roman Empire was winding down and going through its slow decline, Roman leaders began paying barbarians not to attack. That's about the same as the money the U.S. paid North Korea under Clinton and what the Japanese are contemplating doing now. Any fool could tell you what the North is going to do with this money, which is the same thing that barbarians of antiquity did: take the loot and attack anyway.

PRC's threat to take NC by force if necessary. Could such a move involve Japan? It would seem that any US involvement in such a conflict would require the use of Japanese assets.

Any conflict in Asia that involves Japan I think would require us to be involved in some capacity.
With the Japanese allowing us to base Marines in Okinawa, Soldiers in the North and the Navy everywhere they'd expect us to help out a little.
