Even though the Soviet Union annihilated NAZI Germany (with our help of course --- nationalism I think got the better of the Internationale in the end. In most countries, communism was usurped and used as a cover for nationalism. Of course - the difference was that in Europe, the communists already had countries, and so they were more concerned with the "international revolution" than with national liberation, which was the obsession of the Third World. Communism is now dead. And nationalism is still here. Nationalism is the most powerful ideology - besides religion of course - to straddle the globe. I don't think it's time is up yet.

Nationalism did not defeat Communism - in many cases, they went hand in hand.
The Communists of China (early Communists that is) did indeed care about economic reform but many joined the Communist movement in order to unify China and kick out the Imperialists.
The Communists of Vietnam felt the same way. Although economic reform was badly needed, it was also a chance at revolution and to kick out foreign powers.
The days of Nationalism are over in most of the world. Although people have pride in their countries still, the Western world will never again go to war over borders, territory, etc. In the years past, Europe would go to war over small villages or a slight diplomatic insult. Not anymore as we have realized that countries are so inter-connected that war isn't profitable anymore. Who cares about one small town when multi-national corporations dominate your whole country?
The time of Nationalist is at an end. The time of Capitalism and globalization has come and will provide peace and prosperity for all.

Nationalism isn't dead. It explains exactly what's going on in just about every corner of the world. And why Limey hooligans are ejected from every match.

"Nationalism isn't dead."
Neither is communism. It's odne some shape-shifting but it's very much alive and well in the environmental movement, the "anti-war" movement, the US educational system, and among the "open borders" set.

You got that right brother. Who do you think Code Pink is made up of? Look at the delusional statements coming from so many college profs. And who dominates the unions? The lunitic fringe is still a very real force on the left.

Many people don't realize the evilness of communism. Communist system destroyed people in such a way that eventually they became "robots". Communist system made people depend on their government only. It turn brother against brother, kids against their parents and grandparents, it enslaved people. Why people are trying embrase such system is beyond my understanding.

Add to that the fact that the left will always gloss over the truths of what communist states have done to their citizenry and you see it's rise here.
