Something I posted over on THC. I typed it up on the fly so once again it's nothing pretty.
.................................................................................
Over the last few days I've seen a interesting sidenote to the Iranian hostage crisis, and that's the apparent uproar over Nancy Pelosi visiting Syria. I know most of my fellow right leaning posters will disagree with me, but this visit makes sense to me.
There is the argument that the visit will undermine President Bush and the White House. That is true, but I doubt it would be true had President Bush taken the high road and endorsed her visit. She should be easily viewed as not another puppet by Bush and taken as a example that America will work through diplomacy in the middle east.
Over the last summer much was made of the war in Lebanon and Syria's aliance with Iran. Syria is a more secular country though. They are not near the religious zealots that we are dealing with in Iran and will work more against Israel and towards their better interests and in a concerted effort against the US. By having these negotiations we could easily start a rift between Iran and Syria, all for the cost of a few words, and with the mere promise of better relations we could elbow the Syrian government into tougher action against Sunni insurgents.
There is just too much benefit to dialouge with Syria to simply ignore it IMO.

Pelosi let herself be used like a two-dollar whore.
It's a HUGE propaganda coup for Assad.
"We regard the agreement signed last night and the Anglo-German Naval Agreement as symbolic of the desire of our two peoples never to go to war with one another again. '
"My good friends, for the second time in our history, a British Prime Minister has returned from Germany bringing peace with honor. I believe it is "peace for our time." - Neville Chamberlain, 1938.
"We were very pleased with the reassurances we received from the president that he was ready to resume the peace process."
"We came in friendship, hope, and determined that the road to Damascus is a road to peace," " Nancy Pelosi, 2007

But we know she'd never do that. If anybody thinks Syria is going to suddenly abrogate its support to terrorists if we talk nice, then they're living in a fantasyland.

Assad is no Hitler for one thing. For the other, our main concern should continue to be Iran.
Iran is the country that gives Hizballa it's biggest support. Iran is the nation pursuing a Nuclear program. Iran is the country that is supplying weapons and training to shia militants.
Our main gripes with Syria so far are that they are not cracking down hard enough on Iraqi insurgents, and they support groups that work to undermine Israel.
Sorry guys, but by talking with Syria we can at least give the impression of improved relations with a mostly secular regime, and at the same time plant a seed of discontent between Syria and Iran.

I'm sorry, Zach, but Pelosi's trip did not plant a seed of discontent between Syria and Iran. If anything, they're both laughing at us. It's been a good week for the both of them. Iran embarrassed Britain, and by extension, the United States. Syria watched the Speaker of the House defy the wishes of the President of the United States and visit his country.

Pelosi will have done nothing that benefits the USofA in her little trip. I heard Ralph Peters equate her to a Dentist deciding overnight that he is now a Neurosurgeon. She has absolutely no foriegn policy experience and was completely niave. It was a propaganda coup for Assad.
By the way, Syria is a cliant state of Iran through which support is given to the terrorists in Lebannon. It been a good week for the enemies of civilization. Maybe San Fran Nan will now travel to Waziristan and have a chat with Mullah Omar and Osama next.

If there laughing, it is because the white house came out against it and made a public display of the disunity between the Executive and Leg. branch. I'm no fan of Pelosi, Mario, but in this case just letting her go instead of playing the same ole political game would've been better and speaking with Syria would be better as well.

Her visit will do it's damage now, but if the white house had let it be it wouldn't have been as big a issue.

"How many communist insurgents did China support when Nixon had his picture taken with Mao?"
I hope the old sonofabitch is rotting in the 9th level of Hell for it.
It opened the door for the industrial might of the US to be outsourced to the PRC.
The USSR and PRC were at odds with one another at the time. Syria and Iran are joined at the hip.
The Constitution does not give her the authority to conduct foreign policy in contradiction to a sitting President.
She flat-out screwed the pooch here.
