I have been searching for information about how German POWs were treated by their Russian captors in WW2. What did I find? Nothing much. I was wondering if any of you could share your vast wisdom on the subject with me. Were German POWs sent to gulags? Were they simply killed and not put in camps?

One book that I have is in German. However, the THC/Discovery did cover this a few years back. Of the million Germans taken by the Soviets less than 90,000 were repatriated. Most died in slave labor camps in the east. A famous one was Hauptmann Erick Hartmann, the top air ace of the war. After he was repatriated he came to American and was hired by NASA to train astronauts. In his book he spoke of death marches and merciless beatings with 2x4s. There are a number of good NET pages to examine the Wehrmacht and the immediate history. Here are two of my favorite. www.feldgrau.com/ and uboat.net/. Here is another that looks promising www.worldwar2database.com/html/germanpow.htm German POWs. There are also some Russian pages, but many of those have been blocked by the State Dept. Here is a Blog page that you may find helpful forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?t=25227. For what it is worth, there are reports that as many as 200 American GIs were taken to the Soviet Union during the Korean and Vietnam wars to die there. Here is a source to a US Senate investigation of 1993. lcweb2.loc.gov/frd/tfrussia/tfrhtml/tfr_report18th.htmlGood luck. Dave

Dave, Thanks a lot. The links help me uncover what happened there. Maybe I'm naive but I still find the type of treatment dished out by certain countries appalling. -Matt
