I heard a commentator today say that baseball's limp-wristed response to the steroid scandal reduces their credibility as a professional sport to a place somewhere south of professional wrestling.
Any thoughts?

Any thoughts? Mark McGwire had a interview sometime last year where he stated that steroids have little to do with hitting homeruns. He explained that good hand-eye coordination and speed were much bigger factors. As someone who loved McGwire when he played, and hated Barry Bonds for going on more than a decade, I was a little surprised to hear McGwire say this. Was this perhaps a excuse for Bonds and the rest? What's really making these players hit so much better? Barry Bonds hit the most home runs of his career at age 37? He continues to perform at a level taht rivals his carrer when he was in his 20's. It is unheard of that a player would get better in his late 30's. Yet baseball has done very little to investigate this. Has Baseball lost creadiblility for this. Absolutly. Of course, how much creadibility did they gain back after the 94 strike?

Any thoughts? Baseball lost its credibility about a decade ago when the owners appointed an owner as the Commissioner. Because of that, they have had a rubber-stamp Commissioner who approves every trade and free agent signing. In his entire tenure, I can't remember a single trade that Commissioner Selig vetoed or salary signing that he objected to. As a result, baseball has become incredibly polarized with only about 8 teams from each League having a real shot at the playoffs. The rest will never mkae the playoffs unless they can find very rich owners who feel like spending large amounts of their personal wealth on a team. The fact remains that Kansas City will never be a good team again. Neither will San Deigo, Pittsburg, etc. These teams refuse to spend 50 million let alone 200 million like the Yankees do. I've been a Yankees fan for as long as I can remember but teams like them are ruining the sport. They are playing by the rules but the rules need to be changed. Football is one of the best sports in the country because every year pretty much every team has a shot at the playoffs. Baseball its nothing like that at all. And that's why its losing popularity every year. Baseball will do nothing with this steroids scandal. Congress may order the prosecution of several baseball players but MLB itself won't do anything. They need an Independent Commissioner with an actual love for the game. Right now they have a Commissioner who could care less about upholding the rules of the game and it shows.

Good point about the Yankees. I think the most play-out story in Baseball is the Yanks and Red sox. Both teams spend rediculas amonts of cash to compete with each other, but baseball tries to paint the Red Sox as the little man being held down. There were plenty of stories I think would have reached people better. Randy Johnson (now a dahm Yank) gets his 3000 career strike out. Eric Gange save streak. Texas Ranger comeback after A-Rod departure. The Houston Astros battling the St Louis Cardnals in the NLCS, ( A better series than the Yanks-Sox in my opinion). Any of those stories would have been great, but no MLB want to tell us about these two teams for the billionth time.

Haha I absolutely HATE it when people try to paint the Red Sox as a "small-market scrappy team" against the Goliath Yankees. Such BS. The Saux spend well over $100 million and they have the second highest payroll in all of baseball - second only to the Yankees of course. Any team with Pedro, Manny, Johnny Damon, Ortiz, etc. cannot be called "scrappy". I dunno about the 'Stros/Birds series being better than the Yanks/Sox. I absolutely hate the Sox but I thought the series was amazing - although the ALCS last year was better with Boone hitting the home run in extra innings. But this past ALCS nearly gave me a heart attack 10 times Randy Johnson also pitched a perfect game last year, against the Braves. I think it was reported once on Sports Center....

I think that today's baseball stars are mostly pampered and overpaid pricks. They all should be required to play one full game of pro hockey--wherever the hell that's being played today!
As for drugs, the situation seems to me to have totally reversed. We need to go back to the times of Mantle, Billy Martin, etc. etc. and Ruth and his running mates. Yes, they abused a drug----alcohol. But that made it more difficult to do the things they could accomplish on the field!
Today the phony assholes like Bonds and Big Mac also use and abuse drugs but it helps them to do better!
Require these phony pricks to get fucked up on booze the night before most games and let's see how many records they break!
Definitely a fucked up scenario, isn't it?

Haha packer I'm not sure if you know him, but when Davis Wells threw his perfect game for the Yankees against the Twins, he admitted that he was completely drunk the night before and had a hang-over that day ;D ;D ;D
