San Diego voters decided yesterday that the Mount Soledad cross should be the federal government's to bear. Proposition A, aimed at preserving the cross on public land in La Jolla, easily exceeded the two-thirds threshold it needed to pass. Attorney James McElroy, whose client filed a lawsuit challenging the presence of the cross on city land in 1989, called the vote "meaningless. " "It still doesn't mean a damn thing," he said. "Voters should have never voted on it. It's a waste of taxpayers' money."

"Voters should have never voted on it. It's a waste of taxpayers' money." The only cost to taxpayers was negligible...the ink to add that to the ballot. When propositions receive enough signatures to be put on a ballot, thay are added to the next ballot that is put to the voters. This was not a special election for the purpose of voting on the cross. We had a special election because the Mayor resigned and the interim mayor was found guilty of taking bribes as a council member. We had no mayor, and no provision on the books to replace a forcibly removed interim mayor. That is why there was a special election in July, rather than waiting until the next regularly sheduled election. What has wasted taxpayer money is this clown who has been trying to get the cross removed since he arrived in San Diego 16 years ago, against the majority of residents and voters in this city.

They preach about tolerance and acceptance yet have very little of either
