The Christian faith is a good, solid, utilitarian philosophy.
I first came to believe that it was speaking truth when I realized that it depicts the human condition with crystal clarity. Read Ecclesiastes to ultimately learn that you can't take it with you when you die (or that there is nothing new under the sun), read Paul to learn that being content with where you are and what you have is it's own reward, and listen to Jesus Himself to learn that mankind, although it has it's moments, is basically evil, and in need of a Savior.
The humanist airhead types will have you believing that mankind is basically good but nobody ever seems to want to question why alleged "good" people can be capable of the kind of evil that rapes and murders children, or murders unborn children and calls it their right. That's the height of narcissism and selfishness, if you ask me.
Christianity explains why.
The atheist types want to argue about evolution all the time as if it means something but they can never tell you why there is something in the universe instead of nothing in the universe (which is the real question if you ask me). From what I have seen most self proclaimed atheists are ex-Catholics who define their atheism in terms of the Catholic church. In other words, they protest too much to suit me.
The different denominations are different expressions of their worship to God. Some of them get waaaaay off the beam, others less so, but at the end of the day they agree on more often than they don't. It is said that Jesus healed two blind men: one He used mud and the other He didn't. If that happened today you'd have two more denominations: Mudites and Anti-Mudites.
Christianity hasn't been tried and found wanting - it has been found difficult and left untried.
