"Vatican concludes study on condoms" news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061121/ap_on_he_me/vatican_condoms_1This interesting article brings up a pet issue of mine. It is foundation for many of our problems with religion and acceptance today. It does not make any difference if it is the Vatican or Dr. Dobson and "Focus on the Family", we have been preaching a lifestyle that very few of us can achieve. We have been denying our sexuality. This God given gift is a basic drive for all of us. I have Alzheimer patients (male and female) that will sit there masturbating while visiting with you. I have seen severely mentally impaired walk down the hall masturbating. The statistics show that it does not make any difference if we are Christian or agnostic or atheistic; over 50% of all marriages will end in divorce; nearly 60% of all spouses (male and female) will engage in at least one extramarital affair; that nearly 30% of all teenage girls will become pregnant; ..... I(these stats and similar others are availble from any number of web sites ranging from the US Census to NAARAL) There is something wrong with the way we are attempting to present our message for this quote is true for all of us: " It advocates sexual abstinence as the best way to combat the spread of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS." Abstinence has been and will always be our message for the unmarried, but we are hypocrites. How do we live a chase life, deny self, and seek to save the lost while the sexual self is seeking for an outlet? Heck, being married does not equate to satisfaction. How do we cease abortion and homosexuality if we cannot control ourselves? I am seeking input here for pro-choice and gay rights are just band-aides over the wound of our misplaced sexuality. While it is very difficult to find any information concerning the Islamic practices, the anecdotal evidence implies that they are just as sexual as us. They just keep it hidden and have have harsh punishments for those foolish enough to get caught.

Tittus, Go by what the Vatican says and you won't be far off the mark. We are not wild beasts that are unable to control ourselves. We are men. We are not licentious creatures that have to have our daily share of sex. We are men. Just because there are those that cannot control themselves doesn't indicate that what the Church has said is not correct. Abstain until you are married sounds like a good formula to me. If everyone did that AIDS would be beaten in one generation.

Cat, the situation that I am grappling with is beyond my comprehension.
Basically, the West, not just the US and the EU, but both hemispheres of the Western society have bought into the concept that abortion is a viable means of birth control and that gay sex is normal for some people.
I believe, as to most devote believers, Catholic, Christian, Muslim, or Hebrew, that both acts are a violation of our fundamental belief. Yet, here in the West, nearly half of those of us who are professed believers accept the aforementioned statement as fact.
We of faith have been "caught with our pants down" because the statistical facts belie our statement of abstinence. We are being told by the government to shut-up or face stiff civil punishment if we do not silence our calls to stop this immoral behavior and the media that feeds it.
The problem is that few of us have the ability to control the sexual-self. The half of us who have accepted the pro-choice & gay-rights mantra are constantly seeking proof of our failure. The media and communities are all to eager to point fingers at those priests who were weak, at the preachers who were weak, at the "church" leaders who were weak, and use it as proof that we believe a lie. Or they chant the mantra that Jesus loved and accepted everyone or how can a loving God not overlook those innocent sins?
Yet, to those of us of faith, we acknowledge that we are sexual creations and work hard to control that self. I believe that we need to find a way to put that into our message. The message that we must abstain is a laughing stock to many. We need to change the message to one of acceptance of the great gift of sex and one of proper behavior without sounding pious.
I am or was a scientist, I know statistics, I have searched the figures, and now I am going to become a psychologist and believe that I am beginning to see the "heart of man" that God, the Christ, and many biblical authors proclaimed to know. There are no more than 4.8% of us who are gay and less than half that number are lesbian. The US Census has the abortion figures, less than 10000 are given to girls under 16 annually, nearly 78% are given to women 18 to 32 years of age. The reason cited most often (~84%) "The relationship was over". There are less than 500 partial births done annually. There are less than 3000 abortions performed for the life of the mother.
Since when does a standard deviation of 95.2% equate to normal? That is approximately at the second standard deviation from the norm. With the GLB (gay, lesbian, and bisexual) own figures of 4.8% one can see that this is actually the 95.2% sigma from the norm.
Since when does 13000 our of 900,000 (1.4% of all abortions) equate to the accepted reason for retaining the procedure?
Abortion is ancient and was legal in America until around 1878. Even then it was legal until "the quickening" (the point at which the fetus' movements could be felt by the mother ~ 10th week).
We have the technology now to cure many cancers, look at Sailor and myself (cancer "free"). We have the technology to hopefully eradicate many ailments and with the evolving genetic sciences will eventually genetically alter the DNA of the egg and sperm to eradicate many unwanted ailments and behaviors that have genetic markers. Yet we cannot control our sexual appetite or the unwanted consequences.
Something about this whole dilemma just does not make sense.
Thanks for letting me rant.

Tittus, I read your post four times. I'm not sure what it is you are saying. Can you condense it a bit? Thank you Cataracts

We are sexual beings. Our faith is separate for most of us. We engage in sex as often as possible regardless of faith. We fail in our marriages regardless of faith. We accept that sex has unwanted consequences, and yet we engage in it.
Maybe we could reach more people if we acknowledged that God, the center of our world, made us sexual beings for a purpose. Maybe it is time we modified our methods of treating abortion and gay sex as if it were something that we do not engage in. Maybe we should find a Godly way to teach abstinence and maybe, just maybe, we should acknowledge that we need to find a better method of birth control. All of the studies indicate that our current method of sex education has failed to stem the tide. We must change something.
It has always intrigued me that a woman can get pregnant for a 24 to 36 hour time span just prior to ovulation. There must be some God given chemical pheromone that triggers our desire for sex at those moments. For far to many young people who engage in sex for the first time or only once end up pregnant.
I cannot think of way to teach that homosexual activities are against our scriptures without offending. God does not hate the sinner but the sin, yet the most current scientific studies are finding genetic and physiological differences in the homosexual from the heterosexual.
Happy Thanksgiving. May God bless all of you. May He bring those boys and girls home and stop this nonsense violence in the ME.
Dave

The fact that many people engage in sex without regard to their religious beliefs is true and terrible. I don't think that God is going to wash down His teachings just because a lot of people are screwing up. (pardon the pun). I've heard it said that more people will go to hell because of improper sex than any other reason. I also think that the sex problems are a cultural problem. Sex has permeated our culture. Before God relaxes any of His rules, I think He will change our culture in some way. I think hand to hand combat with a bunch of Muslims will change our culture, to speak of one way only. It's true, we are sexual beings and the reason for this is to procreate. The only people allowed to have sexual intercourse are married men and women. If there is sexual intercourse between a man and a woman that are not married to each other it is a sin. If there is sexual intercourse between two people of the same sex, it is a sin. God is not going to change the rules. Those young people you mentioned that have sex and the girl gets pregnant are committing a sin. Cataracts
