While I was home recently a friend of the family passed away. She was Catholic and her funeral was at a recently built Catholic church. There was a large picture of Jesus behind the alter with him standing in front of a cross. The cross behind him had three letters on them that read from left to right "O" "W" "N." The letters were on the ends of the cross and so far everbody I've asked isn't sure of the meaning behind the letters.
The fact that nobody seems to know the meaning is really driving my curiosity and if anybody can shed any light on the meaning than it would be appreciated.

Battleborn, I have no idea what the letters OWN stand for. Sorry. Traditionally every Catholic Church has a Crucified Christ behind and above the alter. You will actually see a statue of the body of Christ as hung on the cross. Lately some Catholic Church have used a "resurrected Christ" which is very often just a plain cross with a statue of Jesus standing in front of the Cross with his arms outstretched at approximately waist high. It must be a foreign laguage I guess, but I still wish I knew for sure.

Is it O W N or is it the greek letters Omicron, Omega, Nu? These stood for the phrase spoken by God to Moses from the burning bush in Exodus 3:14 , "egw eimi o wn", meaning, "I am that I am". Keep in mind this phrase was taken from the Septuagint, the Greek form of the Old Testament. The Old Testament was originally written in Hebrew. www.christiansymbols.net/god_page19.htmwww.christiansymbols.net/halos_page2.htmNote that at times Omega is portrayed resembling a "W".

That's weird....the only symbols I've ever seen on the cross are "INRI" which translated from Latin means Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.
