Good movie - one of the few Hollywood pictures that I could watch all the way through.
Doesn't follow the original book in every detail but doesn't totally screw it up either. :-)

Good movie - one of the few Hollywood pictures that I could watch all the way through. Doesn't follow the original book in every detail but doesn't totally screw it up either. :-) The ending ruined it for me - I'm sorry but it was just really gay. There were also a couple things in the movie that didn't make sense such as: 1) If the aliens put the pods underground millions of years ago, why not just take over Earth before humans got there? 2) Why did the guy's camcorder work (in NYC) if all the other electricity go out? 3) Why the FUCK would aliens attack a planet that contained a virus that could kill them. Did they just miss that part in their studying? 4) How did the kid survive? Seriously? He blew up. 5) Why was the family just chillin in the house in Boston? Did Boston magically escape the attacks?

I agree James because NONE of those were in the book or even the original movie AT ALL. Except of course the manner in which the aliens croaked - basically illustrating that we (as a symbol of England when it was written) earned our right to live here through the deaths of millions that eventually developed an immunity to earth-bound disease. >1) If the aliens put the pods underground millions of years ago, why not just take over Earth before humans got there? In the book, I had the impression the aliens were actually that big using machines to assist in their movements, not that they were little pilots controlling massive killing machines. In the book, astronomers witnessed flashes on the surface of Mars, making nothing of it, when in reality it was a giant cannon shooting the aliens across the gulf of space. There was no lightning storm and the aliens simply struck the earth. In the newest movie, you COULD argue that because the aliens required the use of our blood (which also wasn't in the book), they waited until there was a sufficient number of us before invading. >2) Why did the guy's camcorder work (in NYC) if all the other electricity go out? I wondered that too. And after the second time the girl said, "The power is still on here" to have it followed by an alien attack, they should have taped her mouth shut. >3) Why the FUCK would aliens attack a planet that contained a virus that could kill them. Did they just miss that part in their studying? Ask the author. >4) How did the kid survive? Seriously? He blew up. Maybe he didn't survive and really is an alien agent. >5) Why was the family just chillin in the house in Boston? Did Boston magically escape the attacks? Maybe Spielberg was trying to say that Boston, because it did not get attacked apparently, and bcause the left the City to go to to Boston, is superior to the City?

Yea my problem with the ending isn't with the movie so much as it is with the book. I've never read the book so maybe I'll do that sometime soon. I just think the ending was really cheap and a cop-out. It's like Wells had no other way to end it so he kinda just made something up. I heard (from someone who read the book) that the aliens were shot into Earth but didn't come out for several days because they actually built their pods underground. I guess a couple day break wouldn't be convenient for the movie though. Regardless, if the pods were there for millions of years, wouldn't humans have found out by now? I mean, we do have tons of things underground like subways, electricity, mines, etc. Also, if the aliens required our blood to survive, then how did they survive on their planet? And how did they survive on Earth before "eating" the first humans? Sequal? I'd sure hope not. I hate Boston.

Would someone who has seen the movie explain to me how the hell his son survived?
I'm almost positive I saw him die with everyone else!

Only thing good about this movie was it being filmed in my hometown...Bayonne NJ. Driving down the block one day and who do I see going into a coffee shop? Cruise himself.

I can't say I've met any actors. I've met politicians and political people, like Chuck Schumer, Guliani, Bloomberg, Bill O'Reilly, Charlie Rangel, but no actors. Oh, I did see Corey Feldman a few years ago in the city. But that's about it. My dad worked on Carnegie Hall for years and met hundreds of actors, Charles Bronson, Gene Hackman, etc.

HAHAHAHA!! I T-boned Cal Ripken Jr in Havre de Grace, MD once. He was really nice about it, even though it was my fault. I even got an autograph.
