Mark Bowden gives a very good account of the Tehran embassy staff that was taken hostage during the Iranian revolution and held for over a year.
A coupld of things I took from the book. I was surprised to hear how much hatred was directed at President Carter by the mobs and leaders in Iran. By all means he did whatever he could to be diplomatic about bringing a end to the crisis and they never missed a spot to label and demonize the man.
I beleive he opened himself up for it though. He was too apologetic and his administration portrayed weakness during negotiations for the hostage release.
Perhaps if he had been more rough and troublesome the hostages would have been executed though, but than perhaps we wouldn't have this pariah state now bent on nuclear weapons also. We'll never know for sure I guess.

Most of it revolved around the Military rescue mission which went horribly wrong in 1980. Very interesting. As for Carter, the idiot actually made overtures to the Ayatollah Khomeini. His weakness directly led to the seizure of our embassy.
