I just watched a movie called Little Dieter Needs To Fly.
It's the true story of a Navy pilot (born in Germany before WWII) that was shot down in Laos in 1966 (before we really got involved in Vietnam).
He was born in a war-torn, poverty-stricken, village and the first time he saw an airplane it was a US fighter attacking his village.
He instantaneously fell in love with flying.
He was beaten regularly as a black-smith apprentice. He was worked over 12 hours a day and was paid a few cents a month. They used to peel the wall paper off the walls and boil and eat it for the nutrients in the glue.
When he was 18 he hopped a ship to the USA and eventually put himself through college while living in a VW micro-bus. He joined the Navy and was sent to a carrier.
He got shot down and was taken prisoner. His tale is a FUCKING AMAZING ONE. I don't want to ruin the story for you, but believe me, the parts I just described are the LEAST of it.
Amazing, amazing, amazing.... He still flys airplanes to this day.
