A large onion Jar of Winekraut Apple sauce (sweet) Small raw potato Sugar Caraway seeds Bay leaf Oil (for better taste Olive oil is recommended)
Optional Items
Smoked bacon, smoked meat, smoked sausage.
Saute onions until they are golden brown. Add jar of winekraut including the liquids. Add caraway seeds and bay leaf. Cook on low medium heat for about 15 -20 minutes. Meanwhile mix two table spoons of sugar into cup of apple sauce and to the sauerkraut and continue to cook for another 15-20 minutes. Peal small potato and grind it. Add to the sauerkraut and cook for another 15 minutes.
1. For those who love bacon. Cook bacon with onions first before you add sauerkraut.
2. For smoke meat and sausage lovers add meat or sausage at the same time as sauerkraut.

I recall a recipt like this when I was in Schweinfurt in the early 1970s except fresh cabbage was used rather than kraut.

Remey, you can do it that way, however you need to pre-cook the cabage. Usually they cabage with water with spicy vinegar, bay leaf, and caraway seeds. In mid 70's I was stationed at Rhein Main AFB, Frankfurt.
