This is merely a personal observation, but I prefer a handgun for home defense, at least defense against 2-legged beasts. A shotgun, even with a folding stock, can be grabbed by an intruder in the close quarters inside a house.
I keep a .45 caliber M-1911A1 by the bed.
That being said, I am considering buying a shotgun. If I buy the house my wife likes, I will have a huge natural preserve directly behind me. The guy who did my home inspection also lives along the same preserve, and had an encounter with a group of wild boars while taking his dog out to take a crap.
Pistol for the 2-legged animals, shotgun for the 4-legged ones.
Oh, yeah... after the guy shot one of the boars, the cops came and gave him a ticket for "Discharging firearms in a Residential Neighborhood." $50 fine, but him and his dog were safe.
AND, he got a freezer full of pork!

I keep a M1911A1 by the bed as well. I have one of those Eagle Cannon quick access drawer safes to keep the kids out.

No kids in the house any more so the 1911 stays in my nightstand with the maglite when I'm not taking it to the range. Magazine in with 6 rounds but chamber empty, 1/2 a second to chamber a round. 2nd magazine with 6 in the drawer also.
Calling the cops won't be a problem, if I touch that cannon off in the middle of the night 911 will get calls from half the neigborhood.

In my case, the shotgun wouldn't be deployed indoors.
Not so worried about someone grabbing it as the limitations on where you can swing the muzzle in close quarters.
Got the Glock for close in work.

I prefer the 1911 with the tritium night sights for in home defense. If I needed a rifle, guess i'd have to get my Garand or M1A out, as I don't have a shotgun.
