Before i tell you all about the evening i will tell you this. I am an avid Hunter Fisherman and Outdoorsman and love sportshooting as well and collecting guns (mostly historical firearms) With that being said
I recently went to my brothers for dinner and was havin a lovely evening and dinner when my sister in laws sister showed up. And seemed to take offense to my ducks unlimited shirt. But i just shrugged it off and continued eating. When my brother asked me what i would be doin the next few weeks.I old him preparing for Squirrel season which immediately drew a repulsed look for the young lady. Probably against my better judgement but for my love of debating i asked her if she had a problem with hunting. She replied that she had a problem with guns in general and went on about how dangerous they are and should be banned. Now i believe first off if you decide to have an opinion especially as strongly as this young lady that you should educate yourself on the topic. So i explained to her the necessity for hunting. About controlling animal population and How even if you were to impose bans on guns. Its not the people that buy guns legally that are commiting crimes. These are everyday law abiding citizens not criminals. Ban or no ban criminals will continue to find weapons. Well after our chat she was fuming, got up and stormed away with all kinds of curses aimed my way. Me and My brother looked at eachother shrugged and continued to have a wonderful evening.
What im trying to say is the majority of these people are not educated on these subjects. They listen to the slander they are told so it is up to us. Gun owners Hunters fisherman and outdoorsman alike to educate them.
By the way the guns i own Are Mossberg 500 20 gauge Ruger 10/22 "tank" mauser carbine Mosin nagant M 1891-30 And Bushman AR-15

She got mad because she realised you were right and she had no argument the counter your statements...typical reaction of the uninformed, can't counter a point? Get mad!
Speaking of historical firearms, I got a 1867 Snider Short Sergeants Rifle and Yatagan Sword Bayonet in Afghanistan...and it actually looks like the real thing!

GOP, the only point I can add is the point I tried to make with my signature line about maintaining the means of self defense. I'm not a hunter myself, just never had the desire to hunt with anything more dangerous than a camera, but that's just me. My brother is an avid hunter (and yes, he does supply me with venison on occasion, I love the stuff.)
I enjoy non-hunting sport shooting but was never good enough to qualify for either a pistol or rifle team at the few duty stations I had that had one or the other.
On the other hand, I served in the ship's self defense forces in CARON and NASSAU where I learned some combat shooting techniques using the M-14, 870 12 guage pump and the old faithful M1911A1. One thing I learned is that while you should never take a knife to a gunfight, a 1 1/2 inch firehose can make a dandy weapon and even better shield. ;D
The weapons I own are: Rock Island Arsenal M1911A1 Ultrastar 9mm semiauto (small enough to easily conceal) Remington .22 semiauto rifle (gift from my Dad at age 14)
Mrs Sailor owns a Taurus .38 Special (used to be mine until the first time she shot with it. Who am I to fight nature?)

Is it Mil-Spec?

How's that Rock Island 1911 shoot for you? Is it Mil-Spec? It handles about like you'd expect a 1911 to handle, it's a bit heavy but solid. No, it's not milspec though this one has the WWII matt finish, sights and smooth wooden grips. No "milspec" rattle, it's tight. I haven't done anything to it though I may later. My only real complaint is that it's a bit heavy for "weak hand" shooting, but then that may just be me not being back up to snuff yet. In the 2nd most likely home defense scenario I've come up with I need to be able to shoot left handed in order to take best advantage of a covering corner at the top of the stairs. In THE most likely it would be a matter of which hand comes up with the artillery if I'm unable to reach the top of the stairs before the bad guys do. I practice Weaver type stances plus one handed using either hand. Being left handed to start helps. Calling the cops won't be a problem. If that cannon goes off in the middle of the night a dozen neighbors will be calling. Mr Browning's brilliant brainchild speaks with authority.

It's been my experience, that most people so adamantly opposed to owning guns base all arguments on emotion as opposed to logic. In fact, the same can be said for almost any tradiotionally left of center position.

In fact, the same can be said for almost any tradiotionally left of center position. In many discussions or debates I've noticed that those arguing from the left tend more toward phrases like "I feel..." while those on the right tend towards "I think..." It doesn't really matter if the discussion is written as in on line or conducted in person.

gop,
It isn't that your sister-in-law isn't educated. She is educated too much, and in today's universities and colleges. Therein lays the problem!
